Alfred drops non-conference match

The Elmira College women's tennis team picked up their first Empire 8 Conference victory and moved to 2-0 on the season, defeating St. John Fisher College 9-0. This is EC's third straight win over the Cardinals, Elmira's longest such streak against St. John Fisher in over 15 years.
 
The Soaring Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after both the first doubles team of Kimberly Salkin '18 and Ayaka Yoshino '16 and the third doubles team of Kayla Fitzgerald '15 and Megan Fitzgerald '15 walked off the court with easy 8-0 victories. The second doubles match, however, was much closer as both pairings were exchanging games. EC's Amy Schimdt '15 and Rebecca Zeuschner '18 prevailed with an 8-6 win, giving Elmira the 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
 
The Purple and Gold just about dominated all six singles matches as well, winning each in straight sets. Elmira had the match wrapped up shortly into singles play after Salkin and Kayla Fitzgerald rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories at first and fourth singles, respectively. Yoshino followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles to make it 6-0 and Schmidt followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win of her own, making it 7-0. Megan Fitzgerald and Zeuschner, in their first collegiate matches, each faced tests from their opponents, but each came out on top to complete the EC sweep.

Stevens 5, Hartwick 4  Box Score
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team won five of the first six matches Sunday to clinch a 5-4 win over Hartwick College in Hoboken. 

The win keeps the Ducks undefeated at 4-0 while Hartwick dropped to 2-1.
 
Senior Danielle Stewart and freshman Katrina Guido started the winning for Stevens with an 8-3 win over seniors Steph Luce and Nicole Schepisi at first doubles. With the win, the Stevens veteran-rookie combo moved to 4-0 from that position on the season.

Hartwick sisters Kelly Napolitano and Kristen Napolitano evened things up with a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Ducks rebounded with sophomores Allie Masciana and Jillian Morneau's 8-3 win at No. 3 over senior Lauren Noyes and sophomore Caitlin O'Brien. The win moved the pair's record to 3-0 on the season from the third doubles position.
 
Stewart provide the veteran leadership again once singles started with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Schepisi to give Stevens a 3-1 lead, before Guido followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Up 4-1, Masciana delivered the knock-out blow at No. 6 with her 6-2, 6-0 win over Noyes to clinch the match for Stevens.
 
Stewart, Guido, and Masciana moved their individual records to 4-0 on the season in singles, all doing so from more than one position. As a team, the Ducks have won nine of their last 12 Empire 8 Conference matches.

The Hawks were able to win three singles matches on the afternoon. O'Brien stayed unbeaten at the 5th singles spot only dropping four games, 6-0, 6-4. The Napolitano sisters also remained unbeaten in singles both winning close matches. Kelly prevailed at third singles 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and Kristen held on to win in a third set super tiebreaker 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

Brockport 6, Alfred 3
The Alfred University women's tennis team dropped a non-conference decision to visiting Brockport, 6-3, Sunday afternoon.
 
Alfred (1-2) got singles wins from junior Emma Jackson, 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 in second singles, and sophomore Rachel Cook, 3-6, 7-6, 10-5 in third singles.
 
Seniors Brennan Ferguson and Emily Eisenberg got the Saxons' lone doubles win, taking second doubles, 9-7.
