E8 Athletes of the Week: Sept. 8
Women's golf and football joined in the fun of the 2014 season as E8 teams completed the second week of competition. Those earning weekly honors include....
Football Offensive Player – Hartwick
Tanner Williams, Junior, Wide Receiver – Eagle Bridge, NY/Hoosick Falls
Tanner Williams had career-highs of 13 receptions, 255 yards receiving, and three touchdown catches in Hartwick's come from behind 43-38 win over Western Connecticut State Sunday. After a touchdown catch to open the game, Williams caught an 8-yard TD catch at the half to pull Hartwick within 11 at halftime. He added a TD catch in the second half as the Hawks scored 23 unanswered points en route to victory.
Football Defensive Player – Frostburg
Rowan Pinkett, Junior, Linebacker – Forestville, MD/Prince George CC
Rowan Pinkett was part of a reliable defensive effort in Frostburg’s 24-19 opening day victory over Geneva. Pinkett made 12 tackles, including seven solo stops. He also recovered a fumble in the first quarter, forced a fumble in the fourth and added a tackle for loss on Geneva's second possession. His efforts limited the Geneva offense to 222 yards on the day, including just 26 on the ground.
Football Special Teams Player – Buffalo State
Marc Montana, Junior, Kicker – East Amherst, NY/St. Joe’s
Marc Montana booted a school record 49-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to force overtime and then added a 34-yard field goal to win the game 51-48 in overtime against visiting Cortland. He added a 35-yard field goal earlier in the game to go 3 for 4 and was 6 for 6 on extra point attempts.
Field Hockey Offensive Player – Nazareth
Catherine Willard, Junior, Forward – Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland
Catherine Willard, a junior transfer from Mercyhurst, helped Nazareth even its field hockey record at 2-2 as she tallied two goals and two assists Sunday in a 4-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan. She also scored the tying goal with less than two minutes left in regulation of a 4-3 overtime loss to Oswego Saturday.
Field Hockey Defensive Player – Stevens
Emily Stukenborg, Sophomore, Goalie – Stockholm, NJ/Stockholm
Sophomore Emily Stukenborg made a career-high 18 saves in leading Stevens to a 5-4 win on Saturday at Kean University. The Ducks' second-year starter previously made 16 stops in a loss to Messiah last weekend, re-breaking her personal saves record.
Men’s Cross Country Runner – Utica
Kyle Cairns, Junior – Midland Park, NJ/Midland
The Utica College men's cross country team defended its title for the third consecutive year Saturday at the Steven A. Warde Invitational hosted by SUNY Cobleskill. Junior Kyle Cairns took home first place out of 57 competitors with a time of 29:12.5 on the 8K course.
Women’s Cross Country Runner – Stevens
Amy Regan, Junior – Greek Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills
Junior Amy Regan paced the Vassar College Invitational with a time of 18:19.61 on the 5K course and bested the next closest runner by 1:24. Regan missed her own course record by less than four seconds and helped Stevens finished third as a team.
Men’s Golf Athlete – Scranton
Ryan Brown, Junior – Scranton, PA/Scranton Preparatory
Ryan Brown shot a career-low round of one-over-par 71 to earn medalist honors as the Royals split a pair of matches with King's College, losing 307-314, and defeating Wilkes University, 314-323, on Wednesday September 3, at the Wyoming Valley Country Club in Wilkes-Barre.
Women’s Golf Player – Ithaca
Kelsey Baker, Senior – Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton
Ithaca College senior Kelsey Baker took second among all individuals with a score of 153 at the St. Lawrence Invitational. It was Baker's best finish as an individual in her collegiate career. She was tied for first in medal-play scoring with Alyssa Poentis of NYU, and the individual championship was decided in a playoff. Baker made par on the first playoff hole, but Poentis made birdie to win the medalist honors. Baker scored 77 in the opening round and then posted a 76 in Sunday's final round.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player – Houghton
Landon Sheaffer, Sophomore, Midfield – Richfield, PA/East Juniata
Landon Sheaffer was named to the Fredonia Clarion Classic All-tournament team after scoring two goals on the weekend. He scored the game-winning goal in the 56th minute of the 2-0 win over Buffalo State, and he tallied his second goal of the season in the 57th minute on a header to tie the game 1-1 verse Fredonia.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player – Nazareth
Nate Ripic, Sophomore, Goalie – Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott
Nate Ripic made eight saves in his first start of the season to help Nazareth to a 2-0 win over Oswego on Saturday. The Golden Flyers improved to 2-1 overall in men's soccer.
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player – Alfred
Mariana Crevison, Sophomore, Forward – Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili
Mariana Crevison scored three goals on three shots in the Saxons’ 7-1 win over Canton. She scored her first goal in the first minute of the game for the early 1-0 lead. Her second goal came in the 34
th minute on a header and she completed the hat trick in the 86
th minute.
Women’s’ Soccer Defensive – Stevens
Lindsey Mahnken, Freshman, Goalie – Bayville, NJ/M.A.T.E.S.
Freshman Lindsey Mahnken was named Defensive Most Valuable Player at the Stevens Engineering Cup after posting a pair of shutouts over the weekend. Stevens won its eighth Engineering Cup and Mahnken stopped a total of 12 shots in the two contests.
Women’s Tennis Player – Hartwick
Kelly Napolitano, Freshman – Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai
Kelly Napolitano went unbeaten through her first week of collegiate tennis going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. She went 3-0 in singles with wins over Sage (6-1, 6-1), Houghton (6-2, 6-2) and Stevens (7-6, 6-3) and teamed up with sister Kristen for doubles wins over the Gators (8-2), the Highlanders (8-0), and the Ducks (9-7).
Women’s Volleyball Player – Nazareth
Maria Allocco, Senior, Middle Blocker – Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake
Maria Allocco was named to the all-tournament team for the Golden Flyer Invitational over the weekend as Nazareth won all four of its matches to even its volleyball record at 4-4. She totaled 37 kills on 64 swings for a .484 hitting percentage and became the ninth Nazareth player to surpass 1,000 career kills. She also had 12 service aces, including six in a three-set sweep of RIT Saturday.
Women’s Volleyball Rookie – St. John Fisher
Anna Marcy, Freshman, OPP – Rochester, NY/Penfield
Anna Marcy tallied a team-high 48 kills (3.43 per set) and 30 digs in a 3-1 week for Fisher. She started the week with four aces against D’Youville on Wednesday. Then over the weekend at the U of R tournament she registered 16, 14, and 15 kills to go along with eight, 12 and seven digs.
