Stevens extends winning streak to 11 games
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team led wire-to-wire Monday night en route to a 63-50 win over The College of New Jersey in Hoboken.
The win was Stevens' (11-1) 11
th straight, putting them one victory shy of trying the program record set in 2008. The loss snapped TCNJ's five game win streak and dropped them to 8-6.
Sophomore
Brittany Washington led the Ducks with a career high 17 points while also adding four rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Junior
Kaitlyn Astel chipped-in with 12 points and six rebounds, and sophomore
Erica Guketlov dished-out five assists.
The Stevens defense forced 17 TCNJ turnovers.
Stevens came out strong with a 13-3 run to open the game led by four points from Washington. The Ducks were able to maintain the comfortable advantage over the next several minutes before Washington extended the lead to 11 off a layup with just over seven minutes remaining.
TCNJ was able to cut the deficit to eight at the five minute mark, but an 8-2 Stevens run over the next two minutes put the Ducks up 14 with three minutes to go. From there, Stevens scored six of the last eight points to take a 42-27 lead into halftime.
The Ducks continued to control the pace coming out of the break before going up 10 points four minutes later off a jumper from Astel, and then going up 20 off Darby's jumper five minutes later.
The Lions responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to 12 with four minutes remaining, but a jumper from freshman
Anna Toke followed by a layup from Washington ended the threat and put Stevens up by 16. The lead was more than enough for the Ducks defense as they cruised the rest of the way for the 13 point win.
The Ducks will continue their home stand Friday with a crucial Empire 8 Conference matchup against Ithaca College at 6 p.m.
