Dual Meet Wins For Hartwick, Naz, Ithaca

UTICA, N.Y. -- The Nazareth men’s swimming and diving team enjoyed a very successful Saturday against Utica and Cobleskill in a tri-meet hosted by the Pioneers. The Golden Flyers downed host Utica 197-80 and Cobleskill 211-76. Nazareth won 13 events and improves to 4-4 overall.
The 200-yard medley team, consisting of
Dan Burke,
Ibrahim Stungurys,
Ian Deveney, and
Matt Leverich, started the meet with a first-place finish with a time of 1:45.24. Burke also added first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (:53.61), 100-yard freestyle (:51.37), and 500 freestyle (5:03.48). Junior
Sean Doyle finished a fraction of a second behind Burke in the 100 freestyle for second, touching the wall in :51.62. Doyle won the 50-freestyle race with a time of :23.57. Similar to Doyle, Leverich also took second to Burke and won an additional event. Leverich was second in the 500 event with a time of 5:23.15 then won the 200 freestyle (1:55.53).
Other first-place finishes included freshman
Philip Nanula, who took first in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:00.68), Deveney, who was first in the 200 butterfly (2:16.83), and Stungurys, who was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.37). Freshman
Nicholas Mooney won the 200 breaststroke (2:26.95) and was second to Stungurys in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.75) while
Andrew Haack,
Declan Lyons, and
Robert Ramos each added third-place finishes in the 1000, 200, and 50 events, respectively. Haack touched the wall in 11:34.16 while Lyons touched in 2:22.67 and Ramos finished in :24.53.
To close out Nazareth's top performances in individual swimming events, freshman
Peter Shea added a second-place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.08, and Lyons was third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:15.82.
The Golden Flyers took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Doyle,
Brett Grant, Nanula, and Leverich took first. Nazareth's team of Lyons, Haack,
Martin Piva, and Stungurys was third in the relay.
In the diving events, freshmen
Andrew Closson and
Zachary Fink were first and second, respectively, in both events. Closson tallied scores of 164.65 and 192.8. Fink had scores of 130.25 and 191.3.
Nazareth is in action again next Saturday when the Golden Flyers host RIT at 1 p.m.
Ithaca 187, Alfred 104
ALFRED, N.Y. - The Ithaca College men's swimming and diving team picked up its 14th-straight dual meet victory on Saturday, as the Bombers defeated the Alfred Saxons by a score of 187-104. Ithaca secured 12 first place finishes in 16 events.
Clement Towner picked up the first victory of the day, taking the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.65. Towner earned his second first-place finish of the meet in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:01.21.
Senior diver
Matt Morrison highlighted the day with a sweep of the diving events. Morrison placed first in 1-meter diving, scoring a 374.20 to break the pool record. Morrison completed the sweep with a score of 376.50 in 3-meter diving, also setting a pool record.
Adam Zelehowsky continued Ithaca's strong showing with a win in the 200-yard freestyle, touching first in a time of 1:44.01. The Bombers followed with two more individual victories.
Logan Metzger earned the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.43, before
Aidan Hartswick paced the field of six with a time of 1:00.35 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hartswick also finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.73.
Lucas Zelehowsky secured two individual first-place finishes, starting with a time of 1:55.89 to earn the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly. Zelehowsky placed first in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 52.42 to take both fly events for the Bombers.
Ben Kennedy and
James Bowe rounded out the top finishes for Ithaca. Kennedy paced the field of six with a time of 2:03.75 in the 200-yard backstroke, before Bowe placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:20.09.
Ithaca returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 25, as the Bombers will host the Dick Comanzo Diving Invitational at the A&E Center Athletics Center. Start time is set for 10 a.m.

Hartwick 160, St. Lawrence 75
CANTON, N.Y. – Seven different Hawks won individual events as Hartwick’s men’s swimming & diving team cruised to a 160-75 victory over St. Lawrence Saturday in Canton, NY. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 10-5 in dual meets this season.
Sophomore Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL/Coral Shores) was the lone Hartwick swimmer to win multiple races. He won both the 200 individual medley (2:02.32) and the 100 freestyle (49.20).
Seniors Kris Sanders (Tillsonburg, ONT/St. Mary’s), Nick Kirkpatrick (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), juniors Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City), Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan), and sophomores Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley) also earned first-place finishes.
Sanders won the 200 breaststroke (2:23.68) with Kirkpatrick taking nine points in the 200 butterfly (2:07.82). Plunkett won the 200 freestyle (1:47.93) and Detar was first in the 500 freestyle (4:52.12). Mulvehill was tops in the 50 free (22.42) and Edmister won the 200 backstroke (2:02.28).
Both Hartwick relay teams also won races against the Saints. The 200 medley relay team of Plunkett, Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Santiesteban, and Mulvehill won the 200 medley relay in 1:40.27. Miles Blaney (New York, NY/NYC Lab School), Dave Mauro (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls), Zac Whitenack (Watertown, NY/General Brown), and Edmister took the 400 free relay in 3:25.32.
The Hawks close out their dual meet season next Saturday against Stevens at ’Wick’s Sally Griffiths Herbert ’99 Aquatics Center. The meet serves as Hartwick’s Senior Recognition Parent Appreciation Meet.
