E8 Wins for Bombers, Cardinals, Ducks and Hawks

STEVENS 68, Houghton 42 (Box Score)
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team saw 12 different players score Saturday as the team won its seventh straight in a 68-42 rout over Houghton College in Hoboken.
 
The victory gives the Ducks (7-1) their longest win streak since the team won nine straight during the 2010-2011 season. The loss dropped Houghton to 3-7.
 
Freshman Sydney Darby led the Ducks with a career high 12 points while junior Kaitlyn Astel hit double figures for the fifth straight game with 11. Sophomore Erica Guketlov, junior Miranda Ripken, and freshman Megan Brown each chipped in with eight.
 
Brown and Astel added seven and six rebounds respectively while the Ducks shot 42.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.
 
Stevens came out aggressively with a 9-0 run capped by a pair of field goals from Astel and Ripken. Houghton was able to respond by pulling to within two seven minutes into the half, but three pointers from Guketlov and Darby ended the run and put the Ducks up by eight.
 
The Ducks continued to keep the pressure on before gaining their first double-digit lead of the game with a jumper from Ripken during the six minute mark. A three point play from Astel with four minutes to go brought the lead to 15 while a jumper from Darby with two minutes remaining gave the Ducks the 17 point lead they would take into the break.
 
The momentum continued to favor the Ducks in the second half as Brown's layup eight minutes in ballooned the Stevens lead to 19. A jumper from Darby one minute later took the lead to 21 before another Brown layup made it 24.
 
Houghton was unable to muster any significant answer allowing the Ducks to go up by 27 with three minutes remaining with a jumper from freshman Ruth Waters. The lead was more than enough as Stevens cruised through the final minutes en route to the win.
 

ITHACA 80, Utica 74 (2OT) (Box Score)
The Ithaca College women's basketball team prevailed in double overtime at Utica, 80-74, on Saturday afternoon. Ithaca is now 8-3 on the season after its second straight conference win. 

The Bombers trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half with 9:42 left, but cut Utica's lead down to one by intermission. Ithaca led just once in the first half at 21-20 and was never ahead again until 63-62 in the first overtime. 

With 13 seconds to go in the first extra period, Ithaca went up by two. Utica sent the game into the second OT on a layup with six seconds to go. 

Utica scored the first two points in the second overtime, but Ithaca tied things up and then took the lead for good. The Bombers shot 40.3-percent overall in the game (29-for-72), and 55-percent in the overtime periods (6-for-11).

Ithaca also capitalized from the free throw line down the stretch. During regulation time, the Bombers went just 8-for-13 from the line (61.5-percent), but made 8-of-11 tries in overtime (72.7-percent).

Senior Francesca Cotrupe paced Ithaca with 16 points and eight rebounds. Cotrupe shot efficiently from the floor, going 6-for-10 to go along with four free throws.

Senior classmates Ali Ricchiuti and Ally Mnich contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Alex Gilligan poured in a career-high 12 points on four made three-pointers.

Sophomore Erin Ferguson and freshman Jordan Beers both added nine points for Ithaca. Ferguson also grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Julie Yacovoni chipped in seven rebounds and six points in 16 minutes as a reserve.

Junior Keri Steele scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds, while sophomore Shayna Gaskins also recorded five rebounds.

Despite playing to two overtimes, the contest was only tied three times and the lead changed sides on four occasions. 


ST. JOHN FISHER 67, Elmira 53 (Box Score)
The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team is off to its best start since the 2005-06 season after taking a 67-53 victory over host Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 2-0 in conference 8 play and 9-2 overall while the Soaring Eagles fall to 0-2 and 3-6, respectively.  

Elmira started off strong in the Empire 8 contest, taking the first basket and maintaining the lead for a solid seven minutes.

Fisher took the lead for the first time when Emily Piacentini stole the ball and netted a 3-pointer. The sophomore guard made two more baskets – a 3-pointer and a layup – to give Fisher a five-point lead at 12-7 with 11:35 left in the opening half.

Sydney Bloomstein cushioned the Cardinals' lead with a jumper to make it a 14-7 game. Fisher saw its biggest lead in the first half at 30-14 with 2:16 left and the Cardinals would cruise to halftime, leading 35-20.

The Cardinals built upon their lead in the second half, taking an 18-point advantage after a PIacentini layup with 8:25 left in the game.

Piacentini finished with a team-best 16 points and three steals. Three other Cardinals scored in double-digits: Mary Kate Cusack with 15 points and a team-best five steals, Bridget Carney with 14 points and Portia Velasco with 10 points. Bloomstein grabbed a team-high nine boards with seven minutes.


HARTWICK 58, Alfred 56 (Box Score)
A layup from sophomore Christina Graziadei with 34 seconds left broke a 56-all tie and pushed the Hartwick women's basketball team to a 58-56 victory over Alfred Saturday at Lambros Arena. With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-7 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8. It marks the fourth consecutive season they have started the conference slate with two victories.
           
The Hawks held a seven-point edge, 56-49, with 3:38 following Sarah Shaw's three-point basket but the Saxons scored the next seven points in a 1:43 span to tie the game up with 1:41 left. Neither team converted on their next possessions but would Graziadei put the Hawks in front. With 15 ticks left, Alfred's Hailey Sick missed on a layup and a foul put the Hawks on the line.
           
'Wick missed the front-end of a one-and-one and the Saxons had the ball with 5.7 seconds left at midcourt. After in-bounding the ball, Harley Cleary dribbled off her foot and out of bounds giving the ball back to the Hawks. They got the ball in to sophomore Courtney Cirillo and she ran out the clock for the win.
           
Graziadei finished with a double-double of a team- and career-high 15 points and a game-best 10 rebounds for the Hawks. She also dished out four assists. Shaw, who played a key role off the bench in the second half, finished with a career-high nine points, including three big three-pointers.  
           
Taylor Vonasek added nine points and seven rebounds. Cirillo scored eight points and Emily Stone contributed five points and eight boards.
           
In the first half, Hartwick led by as many as seven points. A 7-3 run to close the half for the Saxons trimmed the deficit to three, 29-26, at the break.
           
The Hawks maintained their lead in a tight, low-scoring opening ten minutes of the second half. A three-pointer from Cleary put Alfred in front for the first time in the second half at 7:40 but a Graziadei jumper a little over two minutes later put the Hawks ahead for keeps. It was the first points in 7-0 runs for both teams before the deciding Graziadei bucket.
           
The Hawks shot 37% as a team with the Saxons shooting slightly better at 39.6%. Both teams finished even in rebounds 38-38. Hartwick outscored Alfred 34-22 in the paint and the Hawks scored 15 points off turnovers to the Saxons' seven. The 'Wick bench outscored Alfred's 30-2 on the night.
           
Jacqui Foreman turned in six points and three rebounds for the Hawks in the contest. Jess Bellai added three points, four boards, and three assists.
