Nazareth holds off Oswego, 79-75

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Nazareth junior
Lindsey Kelly led a four-player contingent that scored in double figures Sunday as visiting Nazareth held off Oswego to take a 79-75 non-conference victory over the Lakers in women's basketball.
Playing their final non-conference game, Nazareth improved to 5-4 overall. The Golden Flyers open their Empire 8 Conference schedule with three games this week, starting with a 6 p.m. tip at Houghton Tuesday. The Golden Flyers also host Hartwick and Stevens Friday and Saturday respectively. Oswego dropped to 3-6 overall.
Kelly made nine of 15 sahots from the field and also grabbed 10 rebounds to aid the Golden Flyers, who amassed a season-high point total. Junior guard
Veronica Peck equaled a career high with 18 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Junior
Sam Sorge added 15 points with three three-pointers and junior
Julia Brew had 13 points with a pair of threes. Senior
Melissa Reeves had a team-high 11 rebounds.
The teams took turns taking the lead in the first 10 minutes before the Golden Flyers seized control with a 19-12 scoring run that turned a one-point deficit into a 36-30 advantage at the break.
Peck scored 13 of her points, including a pair of three-pointers, to pace the Golden Flyers in the first half. Kelly added nine of her points and Reeves had six rebounds.
In the second half, Nazareth's lead grew to nine points on two separate occasions, but the Lakers managed to stay close. Brew's three-pointer with 8:54 to go put Nazareth up 62-53. Oswego's Alisha Jacobs answered with a three-pointer on the Lakers' next possession. Brew hit another big three-pointer with 3:13 left and Kelly added a three-point play of her own with 1:23 to go to keep Nazareth ahead. Peck made three free throws in the closing seconds and Brew sank two more with :10 left to seal the win.
Nazareth shot 41.5 percent from the field (27-for-65) with eight three-pointers. The Golden Flyers also went 17 for 21 (81 percent) from the free-throw line. Oswego went 23 for 57 from the field (40.4 percent) and 24 for 34 from the line (70.6 percent). Heather Hebert led Oswego with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
