Stevens Tops Lesley In NCAA First Round
HOBOKEN, N.J. (NOVEMBER 14, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team used a three goal first half to top Lesley University 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament first round Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 17-3-1 and will take on Bowdoin College in a second round matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex at 5 p.m. Sunday. Bowdoin topped Johns Hopkins University 3-2 in the other first round matchup.
Stevens started the game off fast, putting in their first goal just 3:44 into the contest. Senior
Kristen Goncalves took a pass from freshman
Olivia Butera and one-touched it into the back of the net. Nearly 11 minutes later, junior
Raba Nassif sent a ball into the box that freshman
Zisi Komar was able to corral and send across to Goncalves, who tapped it past the keeper for her 12
th marker of the season.
The Lynx put shots on goal in the 16
th and 27
th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper
Lindsey Mahnken was able to smother both attempts. The Ducks tacked on a third first half goal, as Nassif fed sophomore
Gabby Pagkalinawan, who blasted a shot that glanced off the keeper for a goal.
2:32 into the second frame, Komar added her team-leading 20
th goal of the season, as she grabbed her own miss that caught the goalpost and deposited into the goal. A Nassif attempt in the 52
nd minute rang off the crossbar, but she would get on the board with a tally in the 55
th minute. Nassif danced around a couple of defenders before getting to the middle of the box and putting a goal in the top corner. The staunch Duck defending limited Lesley to just two shots in the second half.
The Ducks held a 25-5 edge in shots, with Komar and Nassif combining for 11. Senior
Carly Bean and Goncalves each fired three shots, while classmate
Evelyn Ting, Mahnken and freshman
Madi Chollett shared the shutout, making a combined five saves.
Lilly Donovan made nine stops for the Lynx, who ended their season at 16-6. Samantha Rapant and Samantha Bessey had a combined five shots in the setback.
