Stevens Topped By Williams
GENEVA, N.Y. (NOVEMBER 21, 2015) – A pair of goals from Kristina Alvarado proved to be the difference as Williams College topped the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team 2-1 in the NCAA Sectional Semifinals Saturday.
The loss ends the Ducks season at 18-4-1 while Williams will play host William Smith College tomorrow in the Sectional Final.
The Ephs converted their third shot of the afternoon, as a shot from Natalie Turner-Wyatt deflected off of Alvarado into the net. Williams kept the pressure up, putting up nine shots in the opening 45 minutes. Sophomore
Lindsey Mahnken was able to make a pair of stops to keep the deficit at one. With just over one minute left in the half, the Ducks had their best opportunity, as a shot by junior
Gabby Mathelier was saved by the goalie.
Williams doubled their advantage in the 50
th minute, as Alvarado was able to tap in a cross from Kristi Kirshe. The Ducks kept plugging away, firing multiple attempts at the goal, but keeper Tressa Palcheck was there to thwart the attempts. Stevens cut the lead in half in the 83
rd minute, as Mathelier took advantage of a Palcheck turnover and scored her fourth of the season. That would be the final opportunity the Ducks would get, as the Ephs killed the clock to advance to tomorrow's game.
Senior
Kristen Goncalves and Mathelier each had two shots on goal, while fellow senior
Carly Bean had a shot on goal.
Alvarado made her only two shot attempts count, while Palcheck made four saves in goal.
