Stevens Advances To E8 Women's Soccer Championship Game
HOBOKEN, N.J. (NOVEMBER 6, 2015) – The No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team knocked off Houghton College 4-0 in the Empire 8 Conference Championship semifinal match Friday night.
Stevens (15-3-1) advanced to the championship game for the first since 2011, and will take on Ithaca College tomorrow at 7 p.m. Ithaca defeated Nazareth College in the first semifinal 2-1.
The Ducks opened the scoring just 2:26 into the game, as freshman
Zisi Komar took a feed from sophomore
Megan Lynes and blasted a shot from outside the box for her 16
th goal of the season. Senior
Kristen Goncalves had a pair of chances in the ninth and 11th minutes, but both attempts sailed over the net.
Komar added her second of the evening with a nifty shot that rang off the post before crossing the line in the 23
rd minute. With the first half winding down, sophomore
Sammy Mount headed in a corner kick from junior
Raba Nassif to put the Ducks up 3-0 heading into the break.
The Ducks defense was able to hold Houghton's (10-6-2) offense to only 10 shots throughout the contest, with only four going on goal. In the 85
th minute, freshman
Misha Brewster collected a rebound and scored her fourth marker of the season, with freshman
Laura Malacane and junior
Delaney West picking up assists. Houghton had their best chance with under a minute to go, but a free kick sailed over the net.
Komar and Nassif led the way with six shots each, while
Kristen Goncalves had four. Sophomore
Lindsey Mahnken and freshman
Madi Chollett split the game and made a combined four saves.
Sarah Gabriele led the way with six shots for the Highlanders, while Shawna Sprout made six saves in the opening 45 minutes.
