Ithaca Claims WVB Championship with 3-0 Sweep

The second-seeded Ithaca College Bombers swept top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15), Sunday afternoon to capture the 2015 Empire 8 Conference Championship.
The title is the first since 2010 for the Bombers and fifth overall since 1999. Senior Kayla Gromen was named the most valuable player after handing out 25 assists and totaling seven digs in the title match. Gromen had 25 assists and eight digs in the semifinal match.
It is the second straight year the championship match has been decided in three sets and eighth overall since the tournament begin in 2002.
Ithaca's Joelle Goldstein led all players with 11 kills on 20 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. She also had nine digs and two service aces. Amanda Cerruti and Katie Evans finished with six and five kills, respectively.
Christina Sciarra led Stevens with nine kills, Catie Shelton dished out 20 assists and Sydni Horner had 10 digs.
Ithaca improves to 30-4 on the season, which is the most wins since 2007, while Stevens drops to 22-12 overall.
Ithaca clinched the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out who their opponent is on Monday morning in the NCAA selection show at 11 a.m.
