The end of the 2015 fall semester is upon us, which means class schedules are winding down and final exams are in full swing, leaving limited teams in action last week. However a few basketball teams and indoor track and field teams competed and did not disappoint. Those earning weekly honors for the week of Dec. 7-13 include....
Men's Basketball Player - Ithaca
Marc Chasin, Sophomore, Guard – Coral Gables, FL/Gulliver
Marc Chasin averaged a double-double last week as the Ithaca College men's basketball team won both of its contests, defeating Wells College, 89-59 before posting a season-high 96 points in a come-from-behind triumph over Union, 96-85. The Coral Gables, Fla. native averaged 32.5 points and 12 rebounds during the two-game stretch and shot the ball efficiently, going 26-of-41 (.634) from the field. Chasin poured in 38 points against Union on 15-of-26 shooting (.577) from the field including five from 3-point land. The sophomore guard stuffed the stat sheet, posting nine rebounds, four assists and one steal in the win. Earlier in the week, Chasin tallied 27 points to go along with a career-best 15 boards.
Men's Basketball Rookie - Ithaca
Peter Ezema, Freshman, Guard – New York, NY/ High School for Health
Peter Ezema of the Ithaca College men's basketball team posted back-to-back double-doubles last week as the Bombers went 2-0 with wins against Wells and Union. Ezema combined to average 14.5 points and 11 rebounds during Ithaca's two-game stretch. Against Wells, the freshman forward tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds before scoring 14 and hauling in 11 boards against the Dutchmen. Ezema has now posted a double-double in four games this season.
Women's Basketball Player - Stevens
Kaitlyn Astel, Senior, Forward – Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech
Kaitlyn Astel scored a career-high 27 points Wednesday on 10-of-22 shooting in the Ducks double-digit win over DeSales in Hoboken. Astel added four boards and six assists to go along with two steals. Astel followed it up on Saturday with 13 points and five rebounds in the Ducks six point loss to No. 11 Montclair St.
Women’s Basketball Rookie – Utica
Rachel Hunter, Freshman, Forward – West Islip, NY/West Islip
Rachel Hunter had four points while shooting .500 from the field (2-4) in nine minutes of action in the come-from-behind victory against Morrisville on Tuesday night. She added three rebounds and an assist to finish her stat line.
Men’s Indoor Track Athlete – Utica
Nicodemus Gambill, Junior – Rochester, NY/East High
Nicodemus Gambill broke the school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.96 which is also good for fourth fastest in the country in Division III. He also placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.63.
Men’s Indoor Field Athlete – Nazareth
Luis Rivera, Senior – Rochester, NY/James Monroe
Luis Rivera obliterated the field in the weight throw at the RIT Early Season Invite in an ECAC qualifying throw of 18.27 meters. That throw is the second-best mark in the country.
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete – Nazareth
Samantha Goble, Sophomore – Waverly, NY/Waverly
Samantha Goble won the 500-meter dash at the RIT Early Season Invite by more than three seconds in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:18.42. That mark was just .12 seconds off the school record.
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete – Utica
Sarah Wiatr, Senior – Poland, NY/West Canada Valley
Sarah Wiatr won two events as Utica hosted its first indoor track meet at the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center. She finished first in the long jump with a jump of 4.97 meters and placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 11.23 meters.
