The talented administrators, coaches and staff working at our member institutions help to make the Empire 8 Conference successful. And the Get to Know Feature is a way for fans to get a better idea of who these individuals are.

Anna Meyers is the field hockey coach at Hartwick College.

Where did you attend college? I did my undergraduate physical education major at Cortland State and I was a two sport athlete in field hockey and lacrosse.  I also attended James Madison University and I was a major in athletic administration and was the assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at the time.

What made you choose to attend Cortland and James Madison? I really wanted to be a physical therapist and was between Cortland and University of Buffalo for schooling, but I ultimately chose Cortland in order to play field hockey even though there was no PT program. James Madison gave me the opportunity to get into the coaching field.

How long have you been at Hartwick? I have been at Hartwick College for 28 years. I spent eleven years as both the field hockey and lacrosse coach.

What brought you to Hartwick? At the time I was finishing my masters at James Madison I was offered a one-semester coaching position to replace a sabbatical as the lacrosse coach at Cortland. During that time I attended New York State meetings and the current Hartwick field hockey coach announced she was leaving and here I am 28 years later.

What is the best thing about the Hartwick Campus?  The view and the kids I coach.  My office overlooks the valley and even on a gloomy day it is still spectacular and the kids I coach are truly special and will always hold a place in my heart.

What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear ‘Hartwick’? True Blue.

Who has been the most influential person during your career? I have been fortunate to work and play for some great coaches and of course my entire existence is based around my parents.  They were very disciplined and hardworking people. From day one I can remember saying life is too short and they gave me a great perspective on that.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend time in the sunshine and near salt water.

Top three things on your bucket list?
Don’t have a bucket list, because I really try to live my life each day. But I would love to go back to Hawaii, I’d love to see the grand canyon and ultimately spend as much time near salt water.

What is something most people don’t know about you? My passion is really salt water and being near the ocean.

What is something else most people don’t know about you? My great grandfather began a business building scenery for Broadway shows in Manhattan. My family works in the theater district downtown and I spent four summers building sets myself.
