Houghton Drops Non-Conference Tilt at Hilbert
HILBERT 100, Houghton 71
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Hilbert College exploded for 61 second half points to grab a 100-71 victory over Houghton in men's basketball action on Wednesday.
The first half was marked by runs by each team, but it was the Hawks who controlled most of the play.
After the host Hawks jumped out an early 10-point lead, the Highlanders responded with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to two (15-13) at the 12:40 mark of the first half. Another push by the Hawks upped the advantage to 13 before Houghton closed to five with 30 seconds to go in the opening stanza. Hilbert got a bucket in the final seconds to take a 39-32 lead into the break.
It didn't take long for the Hawks to break the contest wide open once the teams returned to the court. Hilbert scored the first nine points of the second half in the first 1:50 to push their lead to 19. Still up by 19 four minutes later, the Hawks knocked off another 10-0 run to go up by 29. The lead would grow to as many as 34 points down the stretch.
Tyler McQuaid (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian Academy) and
Luke Khachadourian (Clifton Park, NY, Loudonville Christian) had team honors with 15 points each. McQuaid added eight rebounds, while Khachadourian pulled down seven caroms.
John Nelson (Houghton, NY, Christian Academy in Japan) chipped in with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench.
Both teams shot the ball well from the field in the second half, with Hilbert hitting 51 percent and the Highlanders converting 48 percent.
Houghton turned the ball over 24 times and was outrebounded 49-40 on the night.
The Highlanders are back in action on Friday, Feb. 13 in an E8 contest against St. John Fisher.
