Day One Results
WEBSTER, N.Y. - Stevens Institute of Technology has the early lead after day one of competition at the Empire 8 Conference Championships in Webster, NY. Ducks won two of the four events and 10 NCAA B cut times were achieved by E8 athletes.
Hartwick’s Miles Blaney got the men’s finals started with an NCAA B cut time of 4:28.54 to claim the conference title in the 500 freestyle. His time was also an E8 championship record and a Hartwick College record. Stevens’ James Betz (4:34.48), Hartwick’s Matt Plunkett (4:35.68), and defending champ Adam Zelehowsky (4:36.13) of Ithaca also hit B cut standards.
In the 200 Individual Medley, Stevens junior Joshua Lefeber claimed top honors with an NCAA B cut time of 1:52.29, nearly two seconds in front of second-place Zac Toth of Alfred. Stevens junior Dave Pilcher finished third (1:54.70).
The men’s 50 freestyle appeared as if it would be a two-horse race with Alfred’s David Luke and Stevens’ Tommy Wolinski the only two swimmers in the Empire 8 to crack 21 seconds entering the meet. Luke would secure top billing, ending the race in the finals in 20.55, edging out Wolinski by .22 seconds. Ithaca’s Logan Metzger managed to crack the 21-second mark and touched just behind Wolinski in third at 20.99.
Wrapping up the night session was the 200 Medley Relay event, which was decided by less than a second. The Stevens team of Ravi Sun, David Duque, Austen Young, and Tommy Wolinski grabbed the title in 1:31.53. Ithaca placed second in 1:32.51. Both times met NCAA B cut qualifying standards. Alfred placed third in the event.
