Ithaca Leads After Day 1 at Championships

WEBSTER, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women, who are in search of their 15
th Empire 8 title have the early advantage at the Conference Championships at Webster Schroeder High School in Webster, NY Wednesday. The Bombers won two of five events on the evening.
For the seventh straight time, a Stevens athlete earns the title in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Danielle Caruso defended her title in the event with a time of 5:03.36. She edged out Nazareth sophomore Camerson Hess (5:04.35) by less than a second. Hartwick’s Rachel Bellis was third (5:08.19).
Ithaca sophomore Grace Ayer won her second consecutive title in the 200 Individual Medley. Her time of 2:05.85 was a little over two seconds faster than Hartwick’s Imma Rutligliano (2:07.98). Ithaca senior Kylie Bangs placed third in 2:08.34.
In the finals of the 50 freestyle just .49 seconds separated the top five Empire 8 athletes. Alfred senior Chrissy Behr touched the wall first to claim the victory in 24.17. Ithaca sophomore Lake Duffy was second (24.28) and Stevens April Lawson also made the podium in 24.50.
Nickie Griesemer of Ithaca repeated as champion in 3-meter diving. She was the only competitor to score over 500 points with a 541.05. Her score marked an Empire 8 record. Teammate Anna Belson was second (466.80).
Stevens took back the title from Ithaca in the 200 Medley Relay in dramatic fashion. Sharon Rooker, Brittany Geyer, Maria McClure, and Jenn Rutledge (1:47.13) beat out Bombers Kylie Bangs, Sam Reilly, Christine Zulkosky, and Lake Duffy (1:47.21) by just 0.08 seconds for the top spot. Hartwick was third (1:51.56).
