Ducks Open Big Lead at Swim Championships

WEBSTER, N.Y. – The Stevens Ducks opened up a 200-point lead over second-place Ithaca on Friday night at the 2014 Empire 8 Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Webster, NY. The Ducks won three races in the finals as they eye their third straight E8 team title.
The 200 Butterfly finals got things started on the night with Hartwick junior Ben Detar taking the title. He swam to a 1:50.08, edging out Ithaca’s defending champion Lucas Zelehowsky (1:52.20) by almost two seconds. The pair finished 1-2 last season. Zac Toth of Alfred was third (1:52.70). All three times met NCAA B cut standards.
Stevens’ Ravi Sun, who placed second at last season’s championships in the 100 Backstroke, claimed top honors this season with a 50.49. He edged Nazareth’s Dan Burke by just .23 seconds for the title. Hartwick’s Matt Plunkett took third in 51.22. All three times were B cut finishes.
Ducks took the top three positions in the 100 Breaststroke. Junior Joshua Lefeber defended his title with a B cut 57.18. Freshman David Duque finished in 57.54 (B cut) and junior Dane Pilcher was third in 57.60 (B cut).
The final event of the night was a thrilling 800 Freestyle Relay. James Betz, Alex Xu, Ravi Sun, and Tommy Wolinski of Stevens (6:49.21) edged out the team from Alfred (6:49.49) by only .28 seconds to win the championship. Hartwick took third (6:51.85).
The championships wrap up tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals slated to begin at 6 p.m.
