Houghton Opens Season with Loss at Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. -- Paul Chapman scored five goals and added an assist to the lead the Highlanders in a 21-11 season opening loss to Bethany College in men's lacrosse action Tuesday.

After staking the hosts to a 1-0 lead, the Highlanders scored three-straight in just over a minute to go up 3-1. Sean Daigler opened the scoring, with Chapman netting the next two. Bethany scored two more before Chapman scored again to give the Highlanders a 4-3 lead at the end of one.

However, the hosts scored three straight to start the second to go up 6-4. Bethany took an 8-7 lead into the halftime break.

Two three goal runs, bookending two goals by the Highlanders, gave the Bison a 14-9 lead. Chapman scored his fifth of the day with 12:37 left in the fourth quarters, but the hosts scored seven of the final eight goals to grab the win.

Josh Bailey added four goals and an assist for the Highlanders, who were outshot 61-34 on the night. Groundballs were 54-36 in favor of the Bison.

Josh Haingray stopped 15 shots in net.

Houghton is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 26 when they on Franciscan University.
