Stevens Opens with Win, Houghton Starts 1-3

Stevens 9, Drew 2

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February
 25, 2015) – Stevens Institute of Technology junior Nicholas Sieber drove in three runs Wednesday to lead the Ducks to a season opening 9-2 victory over Drew University.
 
The Ducks struck first in the bottom of the third, loading the bases on a hit by pitch, a single and a Rangers error. Junior Nicholas Sieber drove in Stevens' first run of the season on a fielder's choice, and senior catcher Gregg Nickels singled home another run bringing the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Zeph Walters then cranked a double to deep center field plating both Sieber and Nickels.
 
Senior Marc Calleo led off the bottom of the fourth with a single through the left side. After a walks by juniors Jonathan Toro and Jayson Yano, Sieber came up big again singling up the middle, scoring Calleo and Toro. A double-steal and a walk loaded the bases where junior Tyler Bush hit into a fielder's choice to drive in another run.
 
Stevens escaped a bases loaded one out jam in the top sixth, as sophomore William Korosec got an inning ending double-play to end the threat. The Rangers battled back to scratch across two runs in the top of the seventh inning as senior Steve Kowalski recorded an RBI single and senior Alfred Krause had an RBI groundout.
                                                                                  
The Ducks added to their lead after sophomore P.J. Wiegartner rapped a single through the left side scoring sophomore Michael Mule'. Then, after a successfully executed double steal, sophomore Garrett Wells hit into a fielder's choice to knock in for the game's final run.
 
Senior Peirce Marston started for the Ducks and recorded the win, tossing five solid innings while allowing only four baserunners and striking out two. Junior Ryan Patterson struck out the side in the ninth inning, and Toro reached base all four times he came up to the plate.

Houghton Recaps

Hanover 3, Houghton 2 (Feb. 25)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -
The Highlanders baseball team squared off against the Hanover College Panthers today in Winter Haven, Florida.

The Highlanders held the Panthers scoreless through six innings with good defense and a great pitching performance by Kevin Cassar. Cassar pitched all nine innings only allowing three earned runs and nine hits.

The Panthers tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Highlanders regained the lead in the top of the eighth with Michael Knapp's RBI single. Knapp ended the day going 3-for-4 at the plate and hitting in both of the Highlanders' runs.

The Panthers came back though. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth the Panthers stung together three singles, which led to two runs scoring and a 3-2 loss for the Highlanders.

Game 1: Concordia (Minn.) 13, Houghton 0 (Feb. 24)
Game 2: Concordia (Minn.) 14, Houghton 2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -
The Highlanders were handed their first two losses of the year in the doubleheader against the Concordia University Cobbers.

In game one of the doubleheader the Cobbers took control of the game with a seven-run fourth inning and never looked back. Concordia went on to score 14 runs and hold the Highlanders scoreless. Michael Kerr went 2-for-3 for the Highlanders with a double and a single.

In game two the Highlanders were plagued with errors and a lack of offense. The Cobbers took a 2-1 lead in the third and then blew the game open in the fourth and fifth innings. The Cobbers ended up with a 14-2 win when the last out was made. For the Highlanders Michael Knapp went 2-for-3 with a double and two singles.

Houghton 7, Cleary 1 (Feb. 23)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -
The Highlanders opened up their season with a 7-1 win against Cleary University. The Highlanders were led by senior pitcher Seth Cornell and junior Brett Rapan.

Seth pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, one earned run and struck out 12 batters.

Brett went 2-for-3 and recorded four RBI's. Rapan's triple scored two of the Highlanders three runs in the fifth inning. 

Michael Kerr also went 2-for-2 with a pair walks.
