E8 Athletes of the Week: February 9
Here are the student-athletes who received weekly honors for the week ending February 8:
Men’s Basketball Player – Nazareth
Mitch Ford, Junior, Forward – Victor, NY/Victor
Mitch Ford averaged 32 points and 11 rebounds in three games for the Golden Flyers last week. He scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds at home against Houghton Tuesday, then recorded 24 points and seven boards in a loss at Alfred on Friday. He then had 37 points and 11 rebounds as Nazareth won in triple overtime at Elmira on Saturday. He shot 60.7 percent (34-for-56) from the field and 77.1 percent (27-for-35) from the foul line.
Men’s Basketball Rookie – Ithaca
Joey Flanagan, Freshman, Guard – Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham
Freshman Joey Flanagan led Ithaca in scoring, averaging 15.5 points as Ithaca recorded a 1-1 week. Flanagan scored 11 points against Alfred on Tuesday, going 4-for-4 from the floor in 20 minutes of work. He scored a career-high 20 points in an 87-83 victory over Houghton on Friday. He hit 8-of-10 shots from the floor against the Highlanders, giving him a shooting percentage of 85.7 over two games.
Women’s Basketball Player – Nazareth
Lindsey Kelly, Junior, Center – Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East
Lindsey Kelly averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Golden Flyers won three conference games last week. She recorded 14 points and eight rebounds in a 66-52 win over Houghton, then posted a career-high 27 points with 13 rebounds in an 81-61 win at Alfred. Among her 27 points included her 1,000th career point as a Golden Flyer. She finished the week with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 40-39 win at Elmira on Saturday. In the three games, she shot 67.6 percent (25-for-37) from the field and 77.8 percent (7-for-9) from the foul line.
Women’s Basketball Rookie – Elmira
Danielle Cleary, Freshman, Guard – Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy
Danielle Cleary averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks in Elmira’s two games. She nearly helped Elmira to a last-second victory against Nazareth, posting her first double-digit scoring game since January 17 with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.
Men's Indoor Track Athlete – Nazareth
Tom Sippie, Junior – Toms River, NJ/Toms River South
Tom Sippie broke a pair of school records at the Ramapo Select Invitational on Saturday at the New York City Armory. He placed second in the 200 and 400-meter dashes with times of 22.16 seconds and 48.71 seconds, respectively. In both races, he finished behind a Division II runner. He ranks second nationally in the 200 and seventh in the 400.
Men's Indoor Field Athlete – St. John Fisher
Mark VanMarter, Freshman – Liverpool, NY/Liverpool
Freshman Mark VanMarter won the long jump event at the Brockport Mid-Season Classic Invite on Saturday with a mark of 7.13 meters. The jump ranks the third-best in the country in Division III this season.
Women's Indoor Track Athlete – Nazareth
Hannah Brackley, Senior – Horseheads, NY/Elmira Notre Dame
Hannah Brackley broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash at the Ramapo Select Invitational on Saturday at the New York City Armory. She placed fourth (behind three Division II runners) with a time of 57.86 seconds. She also placed 15th in the 200-meter dash in 26.62 seconds, just a couple of ticks off her school record of 26.49.
Women's Indoor Field Athlete – Stevens
Gladys Njoku, Junior – Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove
Gladys Njoku took first in the high jump on Saturday at the NYC Armory after clearing 1.80 meters, tying for the fourth-best jump in Division III history and setting a new school record. Njoku is the current national leader in Division III in that event.
