SJFC Rallies For Win; Hartwick Posts Shutout; Ithaca and Utica Fall on the Road
ST. JOHN FISHER 10, William Smith 9
The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half and battled back for a 10-9 win over host William Smith College on Wednesday.
With the win, Fisher, ranked 17
th in the latest national coaches poll, improves to 2-1, while Herons drop to 0-3 on the year, losing all three games but one goal.
The Herons led 6-4 at the half and led 7-5 with just under 20 minutes left before Fisher began its rally.
Lindsey Shoales scored over a pass from
Samantha Barton to pull Fisher within one, and then with 12:32 left,
Chrissy Cook scored her first of two goals, tying the contest at 7s.
Just 33 second later Fisher took its first lead of the half. Shoales won the ensuing draw and Badger scored her second of the game to put the Cardinals up 8-7.
William Smith tied the game at 8s, but Fisher wound answer again. Barton fed Cook for a goal with just over six minutes left to put the Cardinals up for good. Barton then scored the eventual game-winning goal with just four minutes left and teammate
Brittany Didio off on a yellow card.
The Herons pulled to within a goal at 10-9 with just over one minute to go, but Fisher's
Carly Sullivan won the ensuing draw and the Cardinals were able to kill the clock.
For Fisher,
Jordan Johnson, Cook, Badger and Shoales each scored twice. Barton tallied a team-high three points on a goal and two assists, while
Erin Ward also scored.
Shoales led the Cardinals with five draw controls, while Sullivan scooped up a team-high four ground balls. Sophomore
Abbie Reed forced a team-best three turnovers.
Junior goalie
Nicole Hart played all 60 minutes in net and finished with five saves.
HARTWICK 18, Cazenovia 0
Hartwick's women's lacrosse team shutout host Cazenovia (0-1) on Wednesday night by a final score of 18-0. It marked the Hawks' first win of the season. It is also the first shutout of an opponent for the Hawks since a 17-0 win over Ferrum in 2005.
'Wick senior
Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) had a hand in half of the Hawks' goals on the evening and 11 different players registered at least a point.
Jweid scored six goals and added three assists. Sophomore
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack)notched three goals and three helpers, and junior
Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls), sophomore
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls), and freshman
Jessie Matt (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) each contributed two goals.
Hartwick scored on six of its first seven shots in the game and led 7-0 after only 10:17. Naja opened the scoring at 28:01 and Jweid netted her first 37 seconds later for a two-goal lead.
Jweid added her second with 4:50 elapsed with senior
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) assisting, and Coons scored Hartwick's fourth tally just 12 seconds later.
Rosenberg tallied back-to-back goals 2:52 apart for a 6-0 lead. Littleton contributed her second assist on Rosenberg's first tally. Jweid then scored off a feed from
Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) for the seven-goal advantage.
After another Jweid goal at 14:34, she set up
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) for her first collegiate goal with just over 10 minutes left. The Hawks added three more scores in the final nine and a half minutes in the opening period. Rosenberg scored from
Colleen Jones (Ardsley, NY/Hackley), Jweid scored unassisted, and Matt beat the halftime horn for her first 'Wick goal and a 12-0 advantage at halftime.
It was Matt from Rosenberg once again 1:52 into the second stanza. Coons netted her second of the night at 25:08 and Jweid registered her sixth with
Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) assisting at 21:31.
With a 15-0 edge, Jweid set up Naja for her second score. She did the same for
Alex Goodelman (Levittown, NY/McArthur) who also scored her first goal in a Hartwick uniform with under three minutes left. Littleton closed out the scoring with 11 ticks showing on the clock.
The Wildcats managed 11 shots with four on cage but Hartwick keepers
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and
Carla Centanni (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) kept them out. Luce finished with three stops in just under 50 minutes. Centanni stopped one shot in the final 10 minutes.
The Hawks held a 32-11 edge in shots and won the ground ball battle, 38-24. They also won 16 of 19 draws, with Jweid gathering a game-high 12.
Stanford recorded a game-high three caused turnovers for the Hawks. Coons and
Mel Niewender (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) each caused two. Niewender and Littleton tied for a game-high with five ground balls.
Alaina Jones (Mastic Beach, NY/William Floyd) and Stanford contributed four apiece.
Dickinson 10, ITHACA 9
The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team dropped a close game to Dickinson on Wednesday, March 11
in Clermont Fla . Ithaca fell 10-9 to the Red Devils at the National Training Center. The Bombers are now 1-3 on the season and Dickinson improves to 3-0.
Dickinson received votes in the latest IWCLA Weekly Poll and Ithaca remains 18th in the ranking.
Dickinson sprang ahead with three goals in the opening six minutes of the first half. The Bombers responded with a free-position goal by
Morgan Racicot at 13:57. Dickinson extended the lead 5-1 at 11:36.
Molly Fischer countered with a free position goal at 9:31 to start a three-goal rally for Ithaca.
Ally Lates finished on a pass from Racicot at 6:15, to make the score 5-3.
Ally Runyon registered an unassisted goal to pull within one, 5-4, with 5:42 left in the half.
The Bombers entered halftime trailing the Red Devils 7-4.
Runyon found the back of the net just one minute and six seconds into the second half to bring the Bombers back within two. After two more Dickinson goals, Runyon scored again on an assist from
Riley Marion at 18:58. In the next six minutes,
Natalie Lang recorded two goals and Marion snuck one past the Red Devils' defense, having Ithaca trail 9-8 at 12:23.
Dickinson scored one final time at 11:10 and Racicot answered back at 8:14 on a feed from Fischer. Racicot's goal was the last goal of the game made by either team.
Goalie
Emily Ross recorded 10 saves in the first half for Ithaca. Freshman
Kimberly Presuto started the second half in goal for the Bombers and made five saves.
Ally Runyon led Ithaca with three goals.
Morgan Racicot tallied two goals and an assist.
The Bombers edged the Red Devils 12-9 in draw controls and successfully cleared the ball on 11-of-13 attempts.
Skidmore 10, UTICA 7
The Utica College women's lacrosse team gave up five unanswered goals as it fell to host Skidmore College, 10-7, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
UC moves to 1-2 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 3-1. The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they host SUNY Potsdam. Game time s scheduled for 12 p.m.
The first half was a low-scoring affair as the teams combined for just three goals in the first 30 minutes of action. Utica held a 2-1 lead at halftime, however Skidmore outscored the Pioneers 9-5 in the second stanza to pick up the victory.
Senior
Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) led the way for Utica with three goals and added three ground balls and a team-best three draw controls, while her sister
Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) netted one goal and scooped up a team-high five ground balls. Junior
Courtney Wheeler(Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) and sophomore
Tewasherake Barnes (Akwesasne, NY/Salmon River) had one goal apiece and freshman
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) netted her first collegiate goal to pace the Pioneers. Senior
Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) also kept her scoring streak alive as she dished out two assists on the day.
Junior
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made eight stops in net for Utica, while her counterpart, Megan Kolopsky made 11 saves in the win.
