Cornelius Takes Fifth At Nationals
St. John Fisher College's
Devin Cornelius placed fifth overall in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Cornelius becomes Fisher's first All-American in track and field, and marks the first time the program has earned points at the national championship.
The junior finished the two-day, seven-event competition with a total of 5,093 points, setting a new Fisher record.
Cornelius entered the day in fourth place, but dropped to fifth after a posting a personal best time of 8.80 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. He continued his pursuit in the pole vault, breaking his own Fisher record, clearing the bar at 4.25 meters.
He locked up fifth-place and four points for the Cardinals with a time of 2:49 in the 1,000.
"Devin is just a terrific young man," says fourth-year head coach
Mike Henchen, who led Fisher to its first Empire 8 Conference Indoor Championship on the men's side last month. "He's worked so hard to get to this point and it's great to see that all of his hard work has paid off."
