Alfred Ends Spring Break With Wins Over Loras And Marian
TUSCON, AZ – The Alfred University softball team finished its Arizona spring break stay with a pair of wins to up its win streak to four in a row and round out with a record of 10-2 after topping Loras College 6-4 and Marian University 12-4 on Saturday.
Freshman
Shannon Schaefer (Neptune, NJ/Westfield) picked up a win after pitching just over half of the game, allowing three runs, five hits and striking out three batters. Sophomore
Sophia Chiavatti (Austin, CA/Foothills) came in for relief in the fourth inning and closed out with two hits, one run and retired three players from Loras.
Sophomore
Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a 3-for-3 performance from the plate with two SAC bunts, and RBI and scored a run herself to pace the Saxons. Junior
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Township) added a SAC bunt of her own and another RBI while junior
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy), Chiavatti and senior Allison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) all added one to Alfred University's RBI column.
Wickwire then pitched a complete seven innings against Marian, sitting down batters eight times, giving up five hits and three earned runs.
Junior
Mackenzie Miller (Newport, OR/Newport) hit a homer on her 2-for-5 outing. Wickwire, Maher and Lawrence all had a double with Maher posting three RBI and Wickwire and sophomore
Hannah Lawrence (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) adding two each.
The Saxons head back to the East Coast to host Empire 8 foe, Houghton College, in a double-header on Friday, March 27 at 3:00 pm with the second game starting around 5:00 pm at Harrington Park.
