Utica and Stevens Split; Fisher Suffers Loss
ST. JOHN FISHER
The St. John Fisher College baseball program dropped a 10-3 decision to Rochester Institute of Technology on Monday at Houghton College's Kerr-Pegula Complex.
With the loss, Fisher falls to 4-8 overall, while the Tigers improve to 4-0.
Errors plagued the Cardinals early on, as the Tigers scored four in the first and four in the second inning to take a 8-0 lead. All eight runs were unearned, as the Cardinals committed two errors in each of the two frames.
Trailing 9-0, Fisher got on the board in the sixth, as
Frank Carnevale singled in
Shane Barley and
Malcolm Kelsey.
In the eighth, freshman
Tyler Troccia singled, stole second, advanced to third and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Calvin Woolhiser.
Barley led Fisher will two hits.
Sophomore
Marc Iseneker was tagged with the loss. He allowed nine hits and no earned runs over five innings, while striking out three.
UTICA
The Utica College baseball team split a pair of games against Lesley University in a season-opening double header in Winter Haven, Florida on Monday. Utica senior pitcher
Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley)pitched a complete game shutout and struck out four as the Pioneers won game two, 2-0. Lesley rallied from a 2-1 deficit to down the Pioneers 3-2 in extra innings in game one.
Utica first baseman
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) went 2-for-6 on the day with one triple and two RBI's for the Pioneers while senior catcher
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas )added a 2-for-7 effort with two RBI's at the dish.
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markam)also added two hits on the day for UC, while
Adam Pexton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) went 1-for-5 with two runs scored.
Lesley 3, Utica 2 (8 innings) – Game One Final
Utica opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one, but Lesley rallied with the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh and the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the victory.
Utica junior hurler
Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) was stellar in his first start of the season for the Pioneers on the mound. Webb pitched seven innings, allowed one earned run and struck out nine for UC.
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) went 1-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and one run scored in game one.
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) went 1-for-4 with one RBI and
Adam Pexton(Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) added a run scored. Bryan Patterson and
Ryon Lupia (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) each added a hit for the Pioneers.
Ray Cohen had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning for Lesley.
Utica 2, Lesley 0 – Game Two Final
Utica jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three innings of game two and Szatko cruised on the mound in his first outing of the season to guide UC to victory. Szatko faced just 24 batters, struck out four, walked one, forced eight ground outs and seven fly outs as he earned the victory.
Utica's
Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) scored on a throwing error in the first inning to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. Dinnen singled home Pexton in the third inning to account for all the runs the Pioneers would need in the game two victory.
Hobaica finished game two going 1-for-3 with one run scored while Pexton added a double to spark the third inning scoring for the Pioneers.
Brandon Thomas (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markam) added his second hit of the day and shortstop
Christopher Wotten (Blackstock, Ontario/Cartwright) also posted his first hit of the season in the Pioneer victory.
STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball split a doubleheader with Christopher Newport University, falling in the opener 4-2 before winning the night-cap 5-1 on Wednesday.
Stevens improved to 4-3 on the season and CNU is now 7-6.
Game 1: Christopher Newport 4, Stevens 2
The Ducks put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the second with clutch two-out hitting from senior
Marc Calleo. After a pair of walks to senior
Brian Hennelly and freshman
Tommy Baronner, Calleo delivered a double to left center which plated both runners. In the bottom of the inning, junior Travis Myers drilled a solo shot to left to trim the deficit to one.
The Captains took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth, putting up a three-run inning. A leadoff single by junior Connor Henderson and a Duck error put runners on second and third with no one out. Junior Bryant Lowry delivered a two-run double to left field and that was followed up by an RBI single from junior Josh Moore. Junior
Jayson Yano settled down and escaped the inning without any more harm.
Stevens threatened in the top of the seventh after sophomore
Michael Mule' singled and then moved onto second on a wild pitch. A groundout by sophomore
Garrett Wells advanced Mule' to third, but senior Justin Garber retired the next two hitters to end the seven inning contest.
Yano finished with seven punch-outs over five innings of work while surrendering five hits. Calleo, Mule', juniors
Nick Sieber and
Jonathan Toro all recorded hits for the Ducks.
Junior Blake Ream recorded the win for the Captains, allowing three hits over five innings while striking out four.
Game 2: Stevens 5, Christopher Newport 1
Christopher Newport put a run home in the bottom of opening frame when they loaded the bases on singles by Henderson and Lowry and a Stevens error. The run came across on a passed ball, but junior Robert Robins held the Captains to only one run by recording a strike out to end the inning.
Stevens answered back in the top of the third as Calleo again delivered a double to left center in nearly the identical spot as the game one, this time scoring senior
Ryan Mannello who reached on a walk. Calleo came around to score on hard hit single to right center by Toro. The visitors broke the game open with a two-run double by Yano to deep left-center. Senior
Brian Hennelly followed that up with a sacrifice fly that nearly dropped in for an extra base hit but chased Captains freshman starter Joe Burris. Burris allowed five runs in two and two thirds innings with four strikeouts.
A single by freshman Taylor Loudon, coupled by a walk and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth for the Captains, but Robins induced a pop-up to first and got the final out with help of a sliding catch in foul territory by senior
Gregg Nickels.
Robins scattered six hits over innings while allowing only an unearned run with eight strikeouts. The Ducks were patient at the plate working seven walks off the Captains pitchers.
