Highlanders and Golden Flyers Win on the Road
HOUGHTON
Houghton women's lacrosse scored the final two goals of the contest to grab a 13-12 win over Cazenovia College on the road Tuesday.
Early on it looked as though the Highlanders would cruise through this one as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first 14 minutes of action. However, the Wildcats roared back with four of the next five goals to pull to 6-4 at the end of the half.
Houghton outscored Cazenovia 5-3 over the first nine minutes of the second half, but once again the hosts would not go away. The Wildcats scored five-straight goals to edge ahead 12-11 with 10:10 remaining. The teams would play scoreless over the next 4:30 before freshman Meghan Oswald would even the score with her third goal of the game. The gamewinner came off the stick of Elizabeth Westwood with 2:39 left, giving the Highlanders their first win of the season.
Oswald and Jennifer Zacchigna each finished with three goals, while Chandler Jones added two goals and two assists. Kourtnie Franklin made12 stops in net for the win.
NAZARETH
After allowing the first two goals of Tuesday's contest against RIT, the visiting Golden Flyers scored seven consecutive times to claim a five-goal lead at half time. Nazareth went on to defeat the Tigers 13-10 in the non-conference women's lacrosse game. Senior
Brooke Sullivan amassed seven points with four goals and three assists to lead the Golden Flyers' offense.
With the victory, Nazareth remains undefeated and improves to 4-0 overall. Following the loss, RIT drops to 2-2 overall.

Kate Rothrock all had one goal for the Golden Flyers.
After RIT's Sage Sarkis and Emily Livechhi each scored in the opening 10 minutes of regulation, Spoljaric put Nazareth on the board moments after Livechhi's goal. Spoljaric's goal, her second of the season, was set up by a pass from Sullivan.
The Golden Flyers scored three goals in a span of only 1:15 to change their one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead. With 12:11 to play in the half, Marvin scored the game-tying goal with an unassisted score, which was her first of the season. Only 22 seconds later, Sullivan found Gates for a man-up goal to give Nazareth its first lead. Martin capped the run with her fifth goal of the season. Sullivan was credited with the assist, which was her third assist in the Golden Flyers' first four goals.
With 5:47 to play in the period, Sullivan was on the scoring end when she converted a free position opportunity. Marvin and Sullivan each connected on free position shots in the final minute of the first to stretch Nazareth's lead to 7-2 at the break.
After the Tigers were held scoreless for nearly 22 minutes, Livecchi ended the drought 1:35 into the second period. Eighty seconds, later, however, Rothrock answered with her ninth goal of the season to reclaim the Golden Flyers' five-goal advantage.
RIT closed its deficit to 9-6 with 17:55 to play in regulation after the Tigers scored three of four goals in less than four minutes. Amanda Olsen, Sarkis, and Corinna Mandell had goals for RIT. Nazareth's lone goal was by Gates, which came on a free position shot.
Following a timeout by the Golden Flyers, Rothrock collected the loose ball after a missed shot by Nazareth. She eventually found DeVona, who scored a pivotal goal to slow the Tigers' surge. RIT and Nazareth traded the next four goals to leave the Golden Flyers ahead 12-8 with 8:12 to play in regulation. Sullivan scored both of Nazareth's goals while Sammy Ward and Sarkis found the back of the net for the Tigers. DeVona's second goal of the game, and eighth of the season, extended the Golden Flyers' lead back to five goals.
RIT's Livecchi and Schmauder both scored in the final minutes to cut the Tigers' final deficit to three goals. Schmauder's goal came on a free position shot with three seconds to play.
Senior
Ashley Kirch earned the victory with a career-high 11 saves. Caitlin Conway took the loss for RIT after playing the first half and allowing seven goals. Elizabeth Hughes played the second half and allowed six goals. Conway and Hughes were credited with three saves and five saves, respectively.
The teams each finished with 21 shots on goal. Nazareth had a 24-18 advantage in ground balls collected, including 11-5 in the second half. RIT had a 12-10 edge in draw controls. The Golden Flyers were perfect 17-17 on their clear attempts.
ELMIRA
The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (0-3) fell 16-5 to the University of Rochester (4-1) on the road today.
Kelsey Quail '17 led the Soaring Eagles with a career-high four points off one goal and three assists.
The Yellowjackets scored the game's first two goals 1:35 into the first half to take a quick 2-1 lead.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 responded just 23 seconds later to trail, 2-1. Rochester responded with six straight goals to take an 8-1 lead over the next 3:26.
Marisa Carr '18 passed the ball over to over to Quail who scored her goal with 10:16 left in the first half to trail 8-2. The Yellowjackets ended the first half with three more goals to head into the locker room with an 11-2 lead.
Just 3:19 seconds into the second half,
Kylie Connell '17 scored after Quail got the ball to her to trail 11-3. Rochester then scored four goals to take a 15-3 lead before Connell and
Laura Powell '16 scored back-to-back goals with Quail assisting on both plays. The Yellowjackets would end up scoring one more goal before the end of the game to win, 16-5.
Lindsay Wargo '17 made 12 saves for the Purple and Gold today.
ALFRED
The Saxons suffered a loss in their season opener to the Keuka College Wolfpack, 17-6, despite hat trick by senior attack
Kaitlyn Button (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia).
Alfred University began its season off on the right foot, grabbing an early lead over the Wolfpack when Button charged in on a free position shot to put the Saxons up 1-0. Keuka then rattled off four goals in a row over the next 8:02. Button would get on the board again to decrease the deficit, 4-2. The Wolfpack followed the Saxon goal with five more to increase the lead 9-2 at the half.
Keuka opened the second half with two more goals before the Saxons got on the board for their third goal. The drought was drubbed by freshman middy
Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) on a free position shot. Button would then score her third goal of the night only 1:03 later, when senior middy
Kerry Mack (Weedsport, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) dished off the ball near the crease, bringing the Saxons within 7, down 13-5.
Mack got in of the scoring with 18:34 to go in the game on a free position shot that she sent blistering past the Wolfpack goalie, Kayla Robinson. The Wolfpack then went on a four-goal streak to end the game, 17-6.
Freshman
Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) was in goal for the Saxons, making three saves on the night.
