St. John Fisher opened its seasons on Sunday in Florida, while Houghton wrapped up its spring break trip. Ithaca, however, postponed a four-game swing down in Long Island due to weather. Stevens had a game called in the fourth inning due to snow against No. 17/19 Eastern Connecticut State yesterday.

Concordia-Chicago 6, St. John Fisher 5 (12 innings – March 1)

The St. John Fisher baseball team opened up the 2015 season with 6-5 loss to Concordia University Chicago in 12 innings, held in Auburndale, Fla.


With the loss, Fisher falls to 0-1 on the season while the Cougars improve to 1-0.


The visiting Cardinals went ahead 5-4 in the 11th thanks to Malcolm Kelsey starting off the inning with triple to left center.  Kelsey was able to score shortly after on a wild pitch to push the Cardinals ahead.

That lead would not last long, however, as the Cougars pushed their first two runners on in the bottom half.  With runners on second and third Fisher recorded two outs, before a balk advanced the runner home to tie the game.


After Fisher left a runner on the in the 12th, the Cougars used a two-out rally to score the winning run.  Thomas Gier singled with two outs and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.  That allowed the next batter, Brent Spohr, to single up the middle to earn the victory.


Fisher started off quickly scoring three runs in the first.  Shane Barley doubled to left center to score Jack Trotman and Cody Wiktorkski. One batter later, Calvin Woolhiser singled to score Barley.


The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the inning and the score would stay that way until the fifth, when Mike Roman hit in Trotman.


Concordia scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh inning.


Marc Iseneker went 5.2 innings allowing one run on five hits, while striking out six.  


Barley and Trotman each finished 2-for-5 for Fisher.  


The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow for a double header, first against Gwynedd Mercy at 2:30 pm, followed by Eastern Mennonite University at 6 pm.  Both games will be held at the Chain of Lakes Parks in Winter Haven, Fla. 

HOUGHTON RECAPS

Houghton 6, Capital 3 (Feb. 26)


Earlier today the Highlanders baseball team earned a 6-3 win against the Capital University Crusaders in Auburndale, Florida.

The Highlanders started the scoring with an RBI single by Christopher McKay in the top of the first inning. Mckay ended the game 2 for 4 with two singles, a walk and two RBI's.  The Highlanders scored another run in the inning and added two more in the third to give them a commanding 4-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning for the Highlanders the Crusaders put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth against freshman pitcher Victor Cavalieri.  In Cavalieri's college pitching debut he pitched 4.2 innings giving up only three earned runs and earning his first collegiate win.

In the top of the sixth the Highlanders responded to the three-run inning by the Crusaders and put up two more runs for insurance.

From there relief pitchers Kyle Flemington and Chad Muise came in and shut down the Crusaders. Flemington went 2.1 innings giving up zero runs and only one hit. C, Muise got the call in the eighth and ninth innings. He pitched two scoreless innings and was credited with the save.

The Highlanders baseball team split in the doubleheader against Alma College Scots today in Winter Haven, Florida.

In game one the Scots came out swinging and scored four runs in the top of the first.

After a scoreless second inning the Highlanders got on the board with Michael Knapp and Trenton Unverdorben singles in the bottom of the third. The RBI singles put the Highanders within one run and the momentum.

In the fourth and fifth innings the Scots took over and scored 6 runs on the Highlander pitching and held on for a 10-3 victory.

In game two the Highlanders jumped out to an early 1 run lead in the first inning on Michael Kerr RBI single. The Highlanders continued to manufacture runs and were led by Patrick Parsons who went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single.  

The Highlanders had a commanding lead when the Scots came back scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-3.

Then Seth Cornell shut the door on the Scots. Pitching three scoreless innings and giving the Highlanders a 7-3 win. Seth pitched seven innings only allowing two earned runs and striking out eight of the Alma batters.

The Highlanders finish up their spring trip on Saturday against Lyndon State College. 

Houghton 15, Lyndon State 5 (Feb. 28)

The Highlanders baseball team finished their spring trip in Winter Haven, Florida today with a 15-5 win against the Lyndon State College Hornets.

The Highlanders jumped got on the board first in the first with Michael Kerr's  RBI single. Kerr scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead, but the Hornets scored two in the top of the third to knot it up at 2-2.

The lead flipped back and forth until the fourth inning when Kevin Cassar came in relief for the Highlanders. Cassar threw 4.1 innings, allowed only one hit, no earned runs and earning his first win of the year. .

Then the Highlanders offense took over. The Highlanders blew the game open scoring eleven runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Highlanders were led by Bryan Hodge at the plate. Hodge went 2 for 4 with three RBI's and a walk.

The game ended in the eighth inning when the 10-run mercy rule came into effect.

Stevens vs. Eastern Connecticut (March 1)

The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team saw its game vs No. 17/19 Eastern Connecticut postponed on Sunday due to snow.
 
No makeup date has been announced.
 
Prior to the postponement, the Ducks were leading 9-1 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. If the game is made up, the game will be restarted. All stats accumulated will be erased.
 
Stevens will return to action on Wednesday to take on SUNY Old Westbury at 4 p.m. at Dobbelaar Field.

ITHACA POSTPONMENT

The start of the Ithaca College baseball season has been pushed back due to unplayable conditions on Long Island. Ithaca was scheduled to play four games this weekend, but the trip has been postponed.

The Bombers were slated to open their season against St. Joseph's-Long Island today (Feb. 27) in Patchogue; and then play Baruch, Western New England and Old Westbury at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank on Saturday and Sunday.

There are no make-up dates scheduled at this time.

Ithaca's next schedule game is set for March 8 at Pomona-Pitzer in Pomona, Calif. as part of the team's spring break trip.
