Fisher Sweeps Case Western Reserve; Houghton Sweeps Geneva; Stevens Shuts out CSI
The St. John Fisher College baseball team completed a sweep of nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University Saturday with a 5-4 win in game one before handing the Spartans a 13-5 defeat in game two.
Fisher moves to 6-8 on the season, while Case falls to 4-6 overall.
Game 1 – Fisher 5, Case 4
With the score tied at four,
Mike Roman delivered an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to score
Calvin Woolhiser for what proved to be the game-winning run.
The duo of Woolhiser and Roman produced RBI singles in the opening inning to put Fisher on top 2-0.
Fisher picked up one run at the bat of
Victor Konstantinovsky in the third, but the Spartans scored the next four runs of the game to jump ahead.
The Cardinals tied the score in the sixth on a Woolhiser single.
Fisher racked up 13 hits in the game, four of which came from
Scott Eisenmenger. Roman and Woolhiser each notched two hits in the game.
Stephen Lewis earned his first win of the season.
Game 2 – Fisher 13, Case 5
Fisher broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh after erupting for six runs to blow the game open.
Shane Barley and Woolhiser each came up with singles in the inning producing two RBI apiece.
Cody Wiktorski knocked around
Joe Simmons for the final run of the inning.
Marc Iseneker picked up the win on the hill for Fisher.
The Cardinals mustered 13 hits, four at the hands of
Malcolm Kelsey and three apiece from Simmons and Woolhiser.
HOUGHTON
The Houghton College baseball team won both games of the doubleheader against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. Game one the Highlanders won 7-1 and game two they won 7-2.
In game one the Highlanders scored in the first inning when
Michael Kerr (Brentwood, TN, Hamburg ) hit a ground ball to the shortstop, which allowed
Enrico Sukhdeo (Georgetown, Guyana, Ashbrook) to score from third.
The Golden Tornadoes tied it up in the bottom of the third inning when Santana hit a RBI double.
After a scoreless fourth inning the Highlanders scored three in the top half of the fifth.
Brett Rapan (Bolivar, NY, Bolivar-Richburg ) hit a single to center field to start the inning off. With two outs
Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada, Homeschool) hit a double that scored Rapan from second. Sukhdeo then singled to right field allowing McKay to score from second.
Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport) followed Sukhdeo and hit a single to left field, which gave Sukhdeo enough time to score from first.
The Highlanders added another three runs in the top of seventh. Knapp hit a double into left field that scored McKay and
Ethan Duryea (Concord, OH, Cornerstone Christian). Then with two outs
Patrick Parsons (Wellsboro, PA, Wellsboro) hit a single up the middle that scored Knapp from second to give the Highlanders a 7-1 lead.
Then
Seth Cornell (Almond, NY, Alfred-Almond) sat the Golden Tornadoes down in order in the bottom half of the seventh.
Cornell earned the win pitching seven strong innings only allowing six hits and one earned run.
In game two Geneva opened the scoring by bringing a run home in the bottom of the second.
After a scoreless third the Highlanders came out swinging in the fourth.
Michael Kerr (Brentwood, TN, Hamburg ) hit a double to start off the inning. Kerr advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven home when Parsons hit a single into right field. With the bases loaded
Bryan Hodge (Thornton, CO, Community Christian) hit a triple that cleared the bases and gave the Highlanders a 4-1 lead.
The Highlanders scored two more in the sixth when
Tage Johnson (Jamestown, NY, Frewsburg) hit a two run homerun. The homerun was Johnson's first of his college career.
In the top of the seventh the Highlanders added a little insurance when Parsons was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Golden Tornadoes scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.
Kevin Cassar (Mississauga, ON, Canada, Our Lord of Mount Carmel) earned the win for the Highlanders pitching seven innings and only allowing two hits and two earned runs.
STEVENS
Junior
Robert Robbins allowed four hits in a complete game to help the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 2-0 victory over the College of Staten Island on Saturday.
Robbins picked up his third win of the season while helping the Ducks improve to 7-4 overall. He fanned seven while allowing four hits and three walks. Sophomore Brian Russell struck out two over his six innings for the Dolphins. They are now 2-4 this year.
Senior
Brian Hennelly walked to lead off the bottom of the second and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Gregg Nickels. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he was driven in on a sacrifice fly by senior
Marc Calleo. The Ducks tacked on the only other run of the game in the bottom of third after a two-out bunt single by junior
Jayson Yano followed up by a single by Hennelly put runners on the corners. Hennelly broke for second and got trapped in a run-down, while Yano was able to beat the throw home and slid in safely.
The Dolphins threatened in the top of ninth after a single by junior Nick Delprete and a walk to freshman Frank Muzzio put men on first and second with only one out. Robbins escaped the jam by inducing a fly out to center and a groundout to the shortstop.
Hennelly recorded two of the five hits for the Ducks while sophomore
Zeph Walters worked two walks at the plate. Freshman Elijah Rodriguez had two hits for the visitors while Muzzio reached base twice.
