Ithaca Sweeps Alfred; Elmira Dominates Lycoming
ELMIRA v Lycoming
A day after their female counterparts defeated Lycoming College, 9-0, the Elmira College men's tennis team accomplished the same feat, taking down the Warriors' men's team by an identical 9-0 score. EC made quick work of their opponents as the Soaring Eagles gave up just 14 games in nine matches with the overall contest lasting just under three hours.
The Purple and Gold held a 3-0 lead after doubles play, but not without a battle at the third doubles spot.
Scott Ferron'16 and
Yaniv Kogan'18 withstood a solid performance from Lycoming's Zack High and Zack Collevechio, but prevailed 8-5.
Keith Bujak'15 and
Satchal Waters'16 continued their strong play at first doubles, winning 8-3, while
Austin Mansell'16 and
Chris Konow'18 picked up their third win of the season after rolling to an 8-0 victory at second doubles.
Elmira continued to assert their dominance in singles, winning five of the six matches by a combined 60-4 score. Bujak gave up three of those games, but had little trouble at first singles, winning 6-1, 6-2. Following Bujak, both Waters and Mansell posted 6-0, 6-0 victories at second and third singles, respectively, as did Kogan at the fifth singles position. Konow surrendered one game in the first set, but that was it as the freshman secured the most convincing victory of his career.
With the match decided, the sixth singles match was played as an eight-game pro set and featured Ferron against Collevechio. In the most competitive match of the day, it would be Ferron who would pull out the 8-6 win and secure EC's sweep.
With their non-conference season now wrapped-up, Elmira turns their attention to their Empire 8 campaign. EC opens Empire 8 play on Friday, March 27th at home against Houghton College. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
