King’s Pulls Away From ’Wick in Fourth Quarter

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Host King's College scored the last five goals of the game over the final 9:04 to earn a 10-5 victory over Hartwick's men's lacrosse team on Tuesday in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Hawks led for nearly the opening 25 minutes of action in the contest before the Monarchs tallied the final eight of nine goals for the win.
           
Hartwick falls to 0-4 on the season with the result. King's improves to 3-4 overall.
           
Jacob Sasche (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) led 'Wick offensively with two goals and an assist. Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) added a goal and one helper and Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayettville-Manlius) and Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) each contributed one tally apiece.
           
The Hawks weathered the storm in the first quarter as they fought of 10 Monarch shots to keep the game 0-0 after 15 minutes. Goalie Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) stopped four King's shots in the quarter.
           
Sasche broke the deadlock 44 seconds into the second quarter with his seventh goal of the season. He then set up McCallan 3:43 later and the Hawks had a two-goal advantage.
           
It took the Monarchs 26:20 to finally break through the Hawks' defense. Ryan Booznarian registered the Monarchs' goal, but Sasche answered right back for the Hawks 1:34 later with his team-leading eighth goal of the season for a 3-1 Hartwick lead.
           
King's inched closer with 1:21 left in the half, and the Hawks entered the break up a goal, 3-2.
           
Simmons found the net 2:54 into the third quarter to once again give 'Wick a two-goal cushion, 4-2. But the hosts rattled off three straight goals 4:41 apart to claim their first lead of the game with less than four minutes to go in the third quarter.
           
Petillo then scored from McCallan on the man-up 1:07 into the fourth to tie the score at 5-5. The Hawks had one more chance to take the lead but McCallan's shot was saved by King's goalie William Pokorny with 12 and a half minutes left.
           
King's took the lead for good on an A.J. Bungert goal with 9:04 showing on the clock. Mike DiCarlo made it a two-goal margin 1:16 later and the Monarchs added three more in the final 4:35 for the final 10-5 margin.
           
The Monarchs had a slim edge in shots for the game, 30-25. The Hawks won the ground ball battle, 27-17, and dominated the face-off circle, winning 14-of-19 draws.
           
Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd) won 14-of-18 face-offs for the Hawks and he registered a game-high seven ground balls. Tanner Patterson (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) added four ground balls. McCallan and Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) each had three. Rourke also caused three turnovers.
           
Brock Johnson led King's with three goals. Bungert, DiCarlo, and Cam Trick each scored twice.
           
Mike Rourke make six saves in the Hawks' cage. Pokorny stopped 11 Hartwick shots.
           
Hartwick next plays on Saturday, March 28 at St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 Conference game beginning at 2 p.m.
