Jones Spearheads Houghton Attack in 19-5 Win over Wells
HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) tallied a school-record 12 assists and freshman
Alyssa Strom (Tonawanda, NY, Sweet Home) tied a school record with six goals to lead the Highlanders to a 19-5 win over Wells College in women's lacrosse action Wednesday at home.
The win moved the Highlanders to 3-3 on the season.
Houghton scored twice in the game's first two minutes, and after an Express goal cut the margin to one, the Highlanders scored five-straight over the next seven minutes to go up 7-1. Jones assisted on each of the five goals in the run. Wells would break the streak with their second goal of the contest with 16:24 remaining, but Houghton scored three more times to push the margin to 10-2. Andrea Gould scored to pull the Express to 10-3. However, the Highlanders got four goals -- two from
Tyler Reese (Kennett Square, PA, Unionville), one from Jones and one from Strom -- to send the hosts to the break with a 14-3 advantage.
Strom scored four times in the first half, while
Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) tallied three scores to lead the Highlanders.
The scoring calmed down in the second half, as Express keeper Quinn Doubet made several strong stops in the first few minutes.
Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman) finally broke through 9:26 into the half, but Maria Fargnoli responded for the Express less than a minute later. After goals from Oswald and Zacchigna, Gould scored again for the Express to make the score 17-5. Strom scored twice in the final three minutes to finish the scoring.
Zacchigna finished with four goals, five ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers on the night.
Elizabeth Westwood (Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) finished with two goals and an assist, while adding five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Oswald had three goals, four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. She was also 1-for-1 on free position shots.
Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast ) made four stops in net.
Houghton had a 38-15 advantage in shots and forced 21 turnovers.
Jones' assist total broke her own school record of six set last season. It is also unofficially tied for the third highest in NCAA Division III history. Her 13 total points is also a school record, breaking her total of nine from a year ago.
Strom's goal total tied her with current Highlander head coach Amanda Zacchigna, who hit the six-goal mark two times in her career.
Houghton is back in action on Friday, March 27 when they travel to take on E8 foe Nazareth College.
