WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 26, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team knocked-off New York University 11-3 and 4-1 Thursday in its home opener at Weehawken Waterfront Park.

The wins moved Stevens to 11-1 while NYU fell to 2-16.

The Violets jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first, but the Ducks answered with three in their half of the inning.

With juniors Gavriella Risman-Jones and Sydney Spitz at third and first, senior Jamie DeGennaro ripped an opposite-field single to push across one. Spitz scored during the next at-bat after DeGennaro purposely got in a run-down before sophomore Jessica Rees capped the inning with a solo home run to left.

NYU answered with a run in the third, but an RBI double from DeGennaro followed by a two-RBI single from sophomore Kelly Klewicki in the bottom half of the inning extended the Stevens lead to 6-2.

Sophomore Gina Schnecker added another in the fifth with an RBI double before the Ducks put up four in the sixth to seal the run-rule shortened win.

Klewicki led the Ducks offensively with three RBIs off two hits while Rees added two runs, two hits, and two RBIs. Senior Kayla Berardi struck out six to earn her team-leading fifth win of the season.

After freshman Olivia Gemma worked a scoreless first, the Ducks got on the board with two in the bottom half of the frame. With Risman-Jones on first after a leadoff single, Spitz laid down a sacrifice bunt that NYU threw away, allowing the run to score.

Sophomore Emily Sellitti capped the rally with an RBI double where Gemma went to work on making the lead stick with scoreless innings in the second and third.

Stevens extended its lead in the bottom of the third after Gemma helped her own cause with a two-RBI single up the middle to score Sellitti and Schnecker.

The Violets got on the board with a run in the fourth, but it's all they got off Gemma the rest of the game as the Stevens rookie allowed just two more hits over the next three innings to close out the win.

Gemma contributed a hit and two RBIs while also striking out five to stay unbeaten at 5-0.
