’Wick Falls to City Rival SUNY Oneonta
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick trailed by a five-goal margin after 30 minutes of play, but host SUNY Oneonta netted five goals in the opening three minutes of the second half to take command in a 20-6 victory over the Hawks on Tuesday at All College Field. Hartwick slips to 2-5 on the season with the result. The Red Dragons improve to 4-6.
Sophomore
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) led Hartwick with three goals in the contest. Senior
Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) dished out a pair of assists.
Freshman
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) broke the ice for the Hawks 2:44 into the contest to stake 'Wick a 1-0 early lead. Nearly four minutes later, the Red Dragons used a three-goal rally in 56 seconds to jump ahead 3-1. They would add another four goals to increase the margin to six, 7-1, with just under 15 minutes to play in the half.
Hartwick got two back as Rosenberg tallied on a free-position effort and
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) registered an unassisted tally within 30 seconds of one another to make it a 7-3 game.
After SUNY Oneonta picked up two more goals, two straight Rosenberg tallies brought the margin to just four, 9-5. The hosts closed out the first-half scoring with under five minutes left for a 10-5 advantage at the intermission.
The Red Dragons began to pull away early in the second session as they scored four times inside the first two minutes and they added a fifth at 26:52 for a 15-5 lead.
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) scored at the 24:41 mark for the Hawks but it would be their final tally of the night. Oneonta netted goals at 21:05 and 18:51 for a 17-6 edge. The Red Dragons added three more tallies in the final 4:49 of action.
Oneonta held advantages in shots (51-15) and ground balls (31-16). The Hawks were edged in draw controls 15-12.
Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) led Hartwick with team-bests of four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Rosenberg and
Meagan Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) each recorded three draw controls for the Hawks.
'Wick goalkeeper
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) made 15 saves in the match. The total included 12 in the first half alone.
Carla Centanni (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) made five saves in cage over the final 18:51 of action.
The Red Dragons received four goals apiece from Taylor Casey, Jillian Donodeo, and Heather Fitzpatrick. Casey also delivered three assists. Autumn Moore and Rori Stark combined to make three saves in goal.
The contest today served as the two teams' Lax4Life game. Lax4Life is a national lacrosse campaign to provide and support programs geared toward adolescent and young adult suicide prevention awareness. The Hawks and Red Dragons sported Lax4Life t-shirts to raise awareness.
The Hawks return to Empire 8 Conference play on Friday when they visit Ithaca College for a 4 p.m. game.
