Cardinals Win First Game Over CNU
The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse program earned its first win of the 2015 season, as the Cardinals picked up a 13-9 victory over Christopher Newport University on Thursday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
With the, win, the Cardinals, ranked 17
th nationally, improve to 1-1 overall.
Fisher never trailed in the game. The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest. The Captains pulled to within one at 3-2, put wouldn't get any closer.
After a Fisher timeout, the Cardinals scored five of the next six goals to take an 8-3 lead, and led 8-4 at the half.
Christopher Newport pulled to within three goals at 10-7 midway through the second half, but Fisher pulled away, scoring three straight goals to take a 13-7 lead with less than five minutes to go.
The Captains scored the game's final goal with just under a minute to make it 13-9, but Fisher goalie
Nicole Hart made two of her four saves in the final moments to preserve the win.
For Fisher, freshman
Kennedy Frink led the way, tallying a career-high six points on one goal and five assists.
Samantha Barton and
Jordan Johnson each scored three goals in the win. Barton also led Fisher with five draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sierra Badger finished with two goals and four draw controls.
Erin Ward tallied one goal and one assist, while
Danielle Falck,
Lindsey Shoales and
Felicia Suto also scored - the goal was Suto's first of her career.
Fisher returns to action next Wednesday at William Smith College.
