Utica Cruises Past SUNY Poly
Marcy, NY (3/7/15)- The Utica College men's lacrosse team did not allow a goal until the fourth quarter as it cruised to a 13-2 victory over host SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) led the way for the Pioneers with five goals, while classmate
Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) chipped in with two scores of his own.
Matthew Miller (Geneva, NY/Geneva),
Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster),
Patrick Mulligan (Commack, NY/Commack),
Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip),
Jeff Pierce (Clinton, NY/Clinton), and
Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) each found the back of the net once, with Stevenson and Finnegan each adding one assist apiece. Senior
Fred Del Genio (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford),
Codey Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa),
Mitch Sobilo (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg),
Brandon Souza (Watervliet, NY/Shaker), and
Brickman House (Oneida, WI/Pulaski) also had helpers.
On the defensive side, senior
Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) caused a team-best five turnovers and collected a game-high eight ground balls. Utica outscored the Wildcats 10-0 in the first 45 minutes of action.
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post),
Parker Smith (Dexter, NY/General Brown), and
Kobi Johnson (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) combined for 13 saves in net for Utica, while RJ Ferrucci and Steve Rimoli also totaled 13 saves in the loss.
The Pioneers are now 8-0 all-time against SUNY Poly (formerly SUNYIT). Utica returns to action Wednesday as it hosts cross town rival, Hamilton College. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
