E8 Athletes of the Week: March 9
Spring sports are in full swing as most programs have been playing in the warmer climate of the south while on break. Those earning weekly awards include....
Baseball Player of the Week – Houghton
Michael Knapp, Junior, Shortstop – Brockport, NY/Brockport
Michael Knapp batted .538 for Houghton during its spring break trip over eight games. He collected 14 hits, 10 runs scored, six RBI and three walks. Knapp produced at least three hits in three contests, and in the field, recorded 22 assists with 11 putouts.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week – Houghton
Seth Cornell, Senior – Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond
Seth Cornell tossed two games for Houghton during a 4-4 spring break trip and won both games. He threw 14 innings (one complete game) with 20 strikeouts and no walks.
Softball Player of the Week – St. John Fisher
Meghan Burns, Senior, Outfield – Delmar, NY/Bethlehem
Meghan Burns led the team with nine RBI and 16 hit in Fisher's 9-1 week in Ft. Myers, Fla. She has opened the season with a .467 batting average, which is second-best behind classmate Kate Disbrow.
Softball Pitcher of the Week – St. John Fisher
Lindsay Thayer, Freshman – Winthrop, NY/St. Lawrence
Lindsay Thayer started her collegiate career off with a 5-0 record during the Cardinals spring break trip in Florida. She amassed a .70 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched, allowing only three runs on 20 hits and 10 walks. She posted shutouts against Bluffton University, York (PA) and Drew University.
Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week – Utica
Ryan Desveaux, Freshman, Attack – Bowmanville ONT, St. Stephen Catholic
Utica College freshman attack Ryan Desveaux netted seven goals over the course of his first two collegiate games to pace the Pioneers to a 1-1 season opening week. He netted a team-best five goals in the Pioneers 13-2 win on the road at SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday. He added two goals in his collegiate debut against St. Lawrence in the Pioneers’ home opener on Wednesday.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week – St. John Fisher
Tanner Swan, Sophomore – Ridgewood, NJ/Loomis Chaffee
Tanner Swan helped Fisher to a 2-0 week as he recorded 17 saves. He made a career-high nine saves in a 9-8 victory over Misericordia on Tuesday and followed that up with a strong performance against DeSales on Thursday, allowing just two goals and making eight saves in 52:15 of action.
Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week – Nazareth
Haley DeVona, Freshman, Attack – Minoa, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa
Playing in her first collegiate game last Saturday at William Smith, Haley DeVona scored four goals, including the game-winner with :20 left in overtime, in a 12-11 Golden Flyers' victory. With Nazareth trailing 7-2 late in the first half and 7-3 at halftime, DeVona scored three of her goals over the final 30 minutes to jumpstart the Golden Flyers' comeback.
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week – Ithaca
Kimberly Presuto, Freshman – Woodbury, NY/Syosset
In her collegiate debut, Kimberly Presuto came on in replacement of the starting goalkeeper and helped Ithaca rally against 13th-ranked York. Presuto made nine saves and allowed just three goals in 35 minutes of action, as Ithaca fell 9-7.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Elmira
Satchal Waters, Junior – Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy
Satchal Waters helped the EC men's tennis team pick up a 5-4 victory over Oswego State in their lone match of the week, winning both his singles and doubles matches against the Lakers. He and partner Keith Bujak cruised to an 8-3 victory at first doubles, helping Elmira take a 2-1 lead after doubles. Then, at second singles, Waters was leading 4-3 in the first set before he got on a roll, winning 8 of the next 9 games to take the match 6-3, 6-1.
Men’s Indoor Track Athlete – Stevens
Nicholas Zickgraf, Sophomore – Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley
At the ECAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, Nicholas Zickgraf finished second overall in the one mile run. His time of 4:15.11 was only .05 seconds behind the winner and also set a Stevens school record in the process.
Men’s Indoor Field Athlete – Nazareth
Luis Rivera, Junior – Rochester, NY/James Monroe
Luis Rivera broke his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw for the fifth time this winter at Saturday's ECAC Championship meet at the New York City Armory. Rivera's toss of 19.18 meters (62 feet, 11 1/4 inches) was nearly 10 feet better than the record he set last season. He has been selected to compete at this weekend's NCAA Indoor meet in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete – Stevens
Amy Regan, Junior – Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills
At the ECAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, Amy Regan took home first place honors in the one mile run with a time of 5:00.68. Nationally, she has the third fastest time in the 3000-meter, and is tops in the 5000-meter.
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete – Ithaca
Brandy Smith, Sophomore – Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades
Sophomore Brandy Smith highlighted the ECAC Championships for Ithaca with a first place finish to top the weight throw. Smith reached a distance of 16.89 meters to mark a career best and lead Ithaca to a second place team finish.
