Fisher Goes 1-1; Stevens and Ithaca Lose
ST. JOHN FISHER
The St. John Fisher College baseball program went 1-1 on Monday, as the Cardinals wrapped up its trip to Florida with an overall record of 4-7. Fisher will return to action over the weekend at Mount Union University.
Fisher 3, Hampden-Sydney 2 (14 innings)
After falling behind 2-0, the Cardinals scored the game's final three runs to pull out the win.
In the seventh, Fisher got on the board with
Matthew Cahill, who went 2-for-4 on the day, scoring on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded and two outs, Cahill scored his second run of the game with
Mike Roman getting hit by a pitch.
It would stay tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the 14
th, when Fisher delivered the game-winning run. After Roman walked, he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Calvin Woolhiser. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the game-winning run on a balk.
Jack Trotman was 4-for-5 in the game with two stolen bases, while Woolhiser and
Cody Wiktorski each added two hits and a stolen base.
The pitching staff was masterful in the win. Starting pitcher
Terry Engels allowed two runs and eight hits over six innings.
Loukas Brigham allowed just one hit over five innings with four strikeouts, while
Kevin Berge earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings.
Heidelberg 6, Fisher 3
Fisher jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but Heidelberg scored five in the eighth to pick up the win.
The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third with
Victor Konstantinovsky scoring on a ground-out from
Cody Wiktorski. In the fourth inning, Konstantinovsky ripped a two-run double to right-center scoring
Malcolm Kelsey and
Frank Carnevale.
With Fisher holding a 3-1 lead and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Heidelberg scored five runs – all unearned – to take the lead for good. Fisher sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Joe Simmons was 2-for-2 for the Cardinals, while
Stephen Lewis pitched seven inning, allowing just five hits and one earned run.
STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team suffered its first setback on Monday, falling to No. 24 Misericordia 3-0 on Monday.
The Ducks saw their record fall to 3-1 on the season, while Misericordia improves to 7-1.
The Cougars wasted no time scoring, plating two runs in the top of the first inning with a two out rally. A pair of infield singles put runners on first and second, with junior D.J. Navoczynski hitting a single to right field to score the first run of the game. Junior Steve Cuccio followed that up with another single to score the second run of the inning.
Junior
Jayson Yano settled down after the rocky start, allowing only two more baserunners over the next five innings. Senior
Gary Boardman relieved him and kept the Cougars off the board until the top of the eighth when junior Mike Cumerford drove in the final run of the game with a double to left center.
The Ducks threatened in the bottom of eighth, after junior
Jonathan Toro singled and senior
Brian Hennellyreached on a walk. But senior Corey Lee recorded a strike out a check swing to escape the jam.
Toro finished with two of the three Duck hits on the afternoon. Yano finished with two strikeouts in his six innings without walking anyone and Boardman fanned three in his three innings of work.
Junior Cory Vogeli threw seven innings of two hit ball for the Cougars, who received multiple hit games from Navoczynski, Comerford and junior Chris Boroch.
ITHACA
The Ithaca College baseball program was shutout on Monday afternoon by Pomona-Pitzer, 7-0, in Claremont, Calif. Ithaca is now 0-2 in the early season, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 13-3.
Pomona-Pitzer opened up a 5-0 lead in the third inning on six hits and three Ithaca errors. The Sagehens put together five consecutive hits, including a double, before an out was recorded.
The Sagehens plated one more in the fifth on a pair of hits with balk to lift junior
Benji Parkes from the game. Junior
Ryan Contegni entered in relief and retired two of the three batters he faced without allowing another run to score.
Parkes tossed 4.1 innings and surrendered eight hits with four earned runs.
Ithaca threatened to score in the sixth after a double from senior
John Stanley and a single by junior
Stephen Yanchus placed runners on first and third with one out. The next two batters were unable to get a ball out of the infield to bring a run home.
Another run came across for Pomona-Pitzer in the sixth for a 7-0 deficit for the Bombers. The Sagehens had a chance to tack on more in the frame with the bases loaded and no outs, but Contegni struck out two straight hitters and forced the third to fly out.
Over Ithaca's final three at bats, the Bombers produced just one hit, a double by senior
Christian Brown, and a walk from senior
Brian Burns.
Contegni tossed 1.2 innings with two strikeouts, while sophomore
Logan Barer went 1.1 innings. Senior
Jared Amory threw the final 2/3 of an inning and fanned one batter.
