Cornelius, VanMarter and Rivera Qualifiy for NCAA Indoor Meet
The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Monday the participants in the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
For each men's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 15 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.
The championships will be held March 13-14 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with Roanoke College serving as the official host.
Nazareth junior Luis Rivera, of Rochester, N.Y., has consistently improved throughout the indoor season in the men's 35-pound weight throw and is ranked sixth in that event with a distance of 19.18 meters (62 feet, 11 1/4 inches). He broke his own school record in that event for the fifth time this winter with a third-place finish at the ECAC Championships in New York City over the weekend. Rivera will be making his first trip to the national meet.
Devin Cornelius and
Mark VanMarter of the St. John Fisher College men's track and field team have qualified in the heptathlon and long jump, respectively. The event will be hosted by Roanoke College on March 13-14 in Winston-Salem, NC.
Cornelius is making his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships after becoming the first-ever Fisher athlete to qualify last season, doing so in the same event. The junior, who finished 11th overall last year, enters this weekend's meet seeded 10th overall with 4,897 points. Eric Larson of Central College is the top seed at 5,375 points. Cornelius qualified after placing first in four of the seven events at the NYSCTC Championship on February 27-28.
VanMarter qualifies in the long jump and is seeded 8
th overall at 7.15 meters. The freshman phenom set that mark this weekend at the ECAC Championships to earn a second place finish and set a new school record. Dominique Neloms of Wisconsin-La Crosse is the top-seed at 7.44 meters.
