Elmira Drops Home Contest to No. 19 Fredonia
Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (1-9, 1-5 E8) fell 16-9 to No. 19 Fredonia State University (9-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) today.
Ashton Hogan '15 led the EC women with five goals while
Lindsay Wargo '17 made eight saves in the loss.
The Blue Devils opened the game with two quick goals to lead 2-0 2:54 into the game.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 answered back with a goal just 1:16 later to put EC on the scoreboard. Fredonia answered back by scoring to up their lead to 3-1 40 seconds after Spoljaric's goals. 5:23 into the first half Spoljaric found an open Hogan who scored her first goal of the game to trail the Blue Devils, 3-2. Fredonia then scored five straight goals to take an 8-2 lead with 15:19 left in the first half.
Spoljaric scored her second goal of the game with 8:29 left in the first half to cut the Blue Devils lead to 8-3. Fredonia found the back of the net just 1:16 later to up their lead to 9-3. Over the last seven minutes of play in the first half, Hogan scored three more times to cut Fredonia's lead to 9-6.
Marissa Mongillo '16 opened the second half in fashion as she won the opening draw control and eventually would get in position to score with a free-position attempt. She capitalized on the opportunity as she scored the half's first goals just 41 seconds in to put Elmira within two, 9-7. EC's four-goal stretch came to an end as Fredonia would net a goal 2:31 into half to lead 10-7.
Hogan and
Sarah Hughson '18 would respond for Elmira with back-to-back goals to trail the Blue Devils 10-9 with 23:57 left in the game. Fredonia would then take control the rest regulation as they scored six times before the end of the game to win, 16-9.
Elmira will compete next this Sunday, April 12th when the EC women host SUNY Canton for a non-conference tilt at 3:00 p.m.
