E8 Wins for Hartwick, Ithaca, Fisher and Utica
UTICA 15, Alfred 2
The Utica College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 15-2 Empire 8 Conference victory over visiting Alfred University on Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first half and they held the Saxons to just two second half goals in the victory.
Utica's
Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) totaled six points on two goals and four assists to pace the Pioneers and she now has 13 points in her last two games played. Junior
Briana Estabrook (Tully, NY/Tully ) totaled a career-high three goals while senior
Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) added three goals of her own. All three of Estabrook's goals came in the final 9:42 of the first half. Kane now has a team-best 40 points this season (32 goals, eight assists).
The Pioneers have now won three straight games and improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8. Alfred's record moved to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in E8 play.
Utica's
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) added two goals and one assist to go along with a career-high eight ground balls and five draw controls.
Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville),
Xiomara Rodriguez (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) and
Tewasherake Barnes (Akwesasne, NY/Salmon River) added one goal and one assist each for the Pioneers.
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) each added one goal as well. Wheeler added five ground balls and three draw controls while
Maggie Notter (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) chipped in with a season-high three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Kaitlyn Button netted both of the Saxon goals. UC managed to hold the visitors scoreless until there was just 1:39 left in regulation. Button then scored both of her goals in a span of 59 seconds.
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy),
Erin Jacobson (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) and
Anastacia Faso (Walden, NY/Valley Central) each posted two saves a piece for the Pioneers.
Shannon Gray made 10 saves in net for Alfred. Utica outshot the visitors 36-10 and earned a 37-16 advantage in the ground ball category. Utica also won 15-of-19 draw controls.
ITHACA 16, Nazareth 6
The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team got off to a fast start and cruised to a 16-6 victory over visiting Nazareth on Saturday at Higgins Stadium. Ithaca led 3-0 in the first three minutes and held an 7-1 lead after just 13 minutes of play. Ithaca improved to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8. Nazareth suffered its first Empire 8 loss and is 3-1 in the conference, and the Golden Flyers are 8-3 overall.
Morgan Cadwell scored twice and
Niki Standera scored once in Ithaca's initial surge. After a Nazareth goal, the Bombers scored five in a row. Five different players hit the back of the net in that run. Ithaca led 8-2 at halftime.
Nazareth pulled to within four goals on two occasions in the second half, but Ithaca closed with the last six goals of the game.
Kimberly Presuto made 11 saves and picked up her second victory of the season.
Cadwell led Ithaca with four goals.
Ally Runyon and
Natalie Lang scored three each.
Emily Petershad a goal and two assists. Ithaca scored on 3-of-5 free-position shots. The Bombers had a 25-20 advantage in shots and a 13-11 advantage in draw controls.
ST. JOHN FISHER 11, Stevens 7
The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse program traveled to Hoboken, N.J. and came away with an 11-7 win over nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.
With the win, Fisher improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while the Ducks, ranked 23
rd in the latest national coaches poll, fall to 8-3, 4-1.
Fisher enjoyed a 6-4 lead early in the second half, but the Ducks scored the next two goals, tying the game at 6-6 with 18:32 left. The Cardinals, however, regained the lead just 27 seconds later, as
Sierra Badger scored on a free-position shot, starting a 4-0 run for Fisher over the next 10 minutes to pull away.
Stevens led 1-0 early in the game, but scored the next four goals to take the lead and led 5-3 at the half.
Samantha Barton and Badger each finished with three goals, while
Erin Ward tallied three points on one goal and two assists.
Senior
Lindsey Shoales scored two goals and led Fisher on the day with six draw controls.
Lexi Peebles and
Danielle Falck also scored for Fisher, while
Jordan Johnson registered one assist and a team-high six ground balls.
Freshman goalie
Molly Maguire had her first start in goal and made seven saves over the 60 minutes.
HARTWICK 17, Houghton 12
Hartwick used a 7-0 run in the first 13 and a half minutes of the second half to turn an 8-8 tie into a 15-8 lead on Saturday in a 17-12 victory over host Houghton College. The Hawks, who improve to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8, have now won two straight games.
Hartwick's
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties),
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack), and
Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) combined for 12 goals and four assists on the day. Werner registered career-highs of five goals and six points. Rosenberg added four tallies and one assist and Jweid contributed three goals and two helpers.
Houghton grabbed the game's first goal 5:58 into the match and added its second 22 seconds later to earn the upper-hand, 2-0. Werner got the Hawks' first goal at 22:44 and the game remained 2-1 for close to seven minutes.
The Highlanders made it 3-1 near the midway point in the half.
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) answered for Hartwick 30 seconds later, and
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) tied the score at 3-3 with 9:14 left on the first-half clock.
The final nine minutes of the first half saw nine goals. Back-to-back Highlander tallies put the hosts up 5-3. The two teams would trade a pair of goals each over the next 1:22.
Colleen Jones (Ardsley, NY/Hackley) and
Jessie Matt(Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) scored for 'Wick in the span.
Jweid pulled Hartwick to within one, 7-6, with 1:35 left in the half. The Hawks weren't content with a one-goal deficit at half so they would score twice in the final 34 seconds to take the lead instead. Rosenberg tied the score and Jweid put Hartwick in front with 15 seconds left for an 8-7 advantage.
Houghton scored first in the second half to even the score at eight. Werner put the Hawks up for good with three straight goals in a 3:27 span for an 11-8 lead. Werner also set up
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls)on the Hawks' next goal. Rosenberg, Jweid and Werner closed out the run and 'Wick was in front 15-8 with 16:32 remaining.
The teams traded goals over the next three minutes. Rosenberg scored twice for Hartwick in the span. Houghton added two goals at 7:21 and 4:24, respectively, but could get no closer.
Hartwick held a 37-24 advantage in shots over the course of the game. They also had 19 draws to Houghton's 12. Both teams registered 25 ground balls apiece.
In addition to her five-point day, Jweid also gathered a game-high six draw controls.
Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) and Young tied for a game-high with four ground balls each.
Alaina Jones (Mastic Beach, NY/William Floyd) caused a game-high three turnovers and added three ground balls. Coons dished out a pair of assists and chipped in three ground balls.
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) made seven saves in the Hawks' cage. She played the opening 49 minutes.
Carla Centanni (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) made two stops in the final 11 minutes.
Jennifer Zacchigna led Houghton with five goals and one assist. Meghan Oswald, Chandler Jones, and Elizabeth Westwood contributed two goals each.
