Men's Track and Field Participates in Roc City Classic

Nazareth freshman
Nick LaBarbera was among the top performers for Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers continued their men's and women's track and field seasons by hosting more than 30 teams at the annual ROC City Classic at Golden Flyer Stadium.
LaBarbera broke the stadium record in winning the 400-meter dash in :49.33. Junior
Tom Sippie followed him to the finish line in third place with a time of :50.19. LaBarbera's time broke the previous record of :49.58 set by Nazareth's Ryan Ingram in 2008. For the third week in a row, junior
Luis Rivera broke his own record in the hammer throw. He had a mark of 54 meters (177 feet, 2 inches). His mark last week was 51.69 meters (169 feet, 7 inches).
In addition to LaBarbera winning for the men's team, junior
Brandon Vuolo set a school record in winning the discus event with with a heave of 40.61 meters (133 feet, 3 inches). Vuolo was 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.69 meters (136 feet, 9 1/3 inches). Junior
Khiary Gayle finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.42 meters (44 feet, 1/4 inch) and sophomore
Matt Battaglia was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.57. Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay team edged the nearly eight-year school-reocrd with a second-place time of 3:21.15. The previous time of 3:21.8 had stood since may 2007. The Golden Flyers' 4 x 800-meter team was seventh with a time of 8:59.36.
St. John Fisher's Joseph D'Agostino won two races in the 100 and 200 dashes. The junior completed the races in 11.15 seconds and 22.09 seconds, respectively. His 200-meter finish also broke a school record and ranks tied for 27th in Division III competition.
Teammates
Trevor Wilkes and
Mark VanMarter also completed the 200-meter dash, finishing eighth and ninth place in 23.06 seconds and 23.09 seconds, respectively.
Peter Girardi also recorded a pair of wins. The freshman finished in 15.53 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and ran to 56.35 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.
William Sterriker and
Chris Wehner recorded solid performances in the hurdles events. Sterriker placed second behind Girardi in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.91 seconds, while Wehner placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.21 seconds.
In field events,
Brandon Fuentes finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.36 meters.
Alfred senior Sean Locker and junior Ian Bishop each won individual events Saturday at the Nazareth College outdoor invitational.
There were no team scores, but several Saxon men turned in solid finishes. In addition to Locker, who won the javelin with a toss of 55.69 meters, and Bishop, who won the shot put with a heave of 14.36 meters, three other Saxons finished in the top 10 of their respective events.
Sophomore
Jeffrey Nunez was second in the discus (40.23 meters) and fourth in the hammer throw (47.08 meters); freshman
Jeff Daneault was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (59.93 seconds) and 10
th in the 110-meter hurdles (17.53 seconds); sophomore
Kevin Dixon was eighth in the 5,000-meter run (16:03.60).
Houghton's Marshall Brady finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles in 16:46 and 13th in the javelin (43.61 meters).
Josiah Evans was 11th in the 110mh in 17:54.
