Ithaca Beats Houghton; Canton and Fisher Handed a Setback

ITHACA v HOUGHTON
The Ithaca College baseball team played its first game in a week after numerous postponements and came away with a 6-3 road victory at Houghton on Tuesday evening. With the win, Ithaca is back to a .500 record at 8-8 on the season, while Houghton drops to 14-12.

The Bombers notched 11 hits in the game, including four extra base hits. Ithaca never trailed the Highlanders on Tuesday, and scored four runs in the top of the fifth and two in the eighth. Houghton attempted a late comeback with three runs in the eighth but left two runners stranded in the ninth.

Senior Andrew Sanders picked up his third victory of the season in 7.2 innings pitches. Sanders struck gave up just five hits, struck out four batters and walked one in his fourth outing of seven-plus innings of work.

Classmate Jimmy Wagner closed out the final 1.1 innings for his third save of the season.

Ithaca's offense was led by a 3-for-3 showing at the plate from freshman Domenic Boresta, who tripled, drove in a run and stole a base. Senior Matt Connolly went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI.

Sophomore Trevor Thompson tallied his ninth multi-hit game of the season in a 2-for-4 outing with a double, RBI and walk. It was also Thompson's fourth consecutive game with two hits.

In the four-run fifth, sophomore Josh Savacool drove in Connolly for the first run on a fielder's choice. Junior Zach Cole then singled in senior Cooper Belyea, and Thompson followed with a base hit to bring in Savacool. Junior Zach Pidgeon capped off the frame with an RBI fielder's choice that plated Cole.

Ithaca's final two runs came off extra base hits from Connolly and Boresta in the eighth. Connolly doubled in freshman Brennan McCormack and then Boresta tripled in the ensuing at bat.


CANTON v Hamilton
Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) spotted the SUNY Canton baseball team an early two-run lead but the Roos dropped a 3-2 decision to Hamilton College in a neutral site game Tuesday evening at DeLutis Field.
 
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) opened the game being hit by a pitch. Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) singled to right center and Nazario-Cruz and Matos showed aggressive base running executing a double steal. With a pair of runners in scoring position and no outs Daniel DePao struck out a pair for the Continentals. Baez came up clutch with two down on a single to center that plated both Nazario-Cruz and Matos.
 
Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) doubled with two out in the second but was left on base after a fly out. Matos reached base in the third inning on a fielding error by the left fielder advancing all the way to third with one down. Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) hit a fly ball to center with one down but Matos was unable to tag up on the play.
 
Hamilton did all of its work in the fourth inning with two outs. Andrew Haser got things started with a solo shot to left field. The Continentals scored their other two runs on an infield single by Robert Morri followed by a SUNY Canton throwing error.
 
Looking to tie the game the Roos got a two-out double in the fifth from Nazario-Cruz but a sharp liner to right from Matos ended the inning. Douglas doubled to right center to lead off the sixth but was gunned down trying to steal third base. SUNY Canton's final solid chance to knot the score came on a leadoff single from Nazario-Cruz in the eighth but he was unable to get any closer than second base.
 
John Mancini (Scotia, NY) got the start on the mound scattering five hits and two earned runs over seven innings. He struck out seven batters and walked one. Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) came on in relief in the eighth and struck out the side. DePao earned the win for Hamilton, while Finlay O'Har picked up the save in three innings of relief.
 

ST. JOHN FISHER v Oswego
The St. John Fisher College baseball team suffered a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday to host Oswego State in non-conference action.

With the loss, Fisher falls to 10-15 on the year while Oswego, who is currently receiving votes in the d3baseball.com poll, improves to 19-6.

The Lakers received a solid outing from freshman pitcher Robert Donnelly who pitched a complete game, surrendering five hits and allowing one run.

Oswego got on the board in the first inning and then padded its lead to 3-0 after picking up two runs in the sixth.

Fisher added its only run of the game in the seventh inning.  Shane Barley and Scott Eisenmenger began the inning with a pair of singles.  With runners on the corners, Matthew Cahill hit a sacrifice fly to score Barley.

Cahill, Jack Vivinetto and Tyler Troccia each mustered a hit on the day.

Dominick Pisciotto pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  Kevin Berge came in relief for the eighth inning inducing three straight ground outs.
