HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 15, 2015) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse head coach
Gene Peluso recorded his 200
th career win Wednesday in the Ducks 8-4 win over Empire 8 Conference foe Utica College.
The win moved Stevens to 8-5 (4-1) while Utica fell to 6-7 (1-4). Peluso's 71 wins at Stevens are the fifth most for a head coach in the program's illustrious history.
Freshman
Tommy Dawson led the Ducks with two goals to go along with three ground balls while junior
Colin Sawula was a force on the defense, causing four Utica turnovers. Sophomore
Kevin Rafferty turned-in a season-high 10 saves in net.
As a team, the Ducks recorded 54 shots to Utica's 23 while defensively forcing 30 Pioneers turnovers.
Junior
Connor O'Shea got the Ducks scoring started with a goal one minute into the game off a pass from sophomore
Connor McKeon. Dawson doubled the lead with an unassisted score five minutes later before Utica bounced back with two of its own to tie the game.
McKeon grabbed the lead back with a man-up goal early in the second quarter, but Utica answered five minutes later with the equalizer to send the game into the half tied at three.
Dawson put the Ducks back in front with a goal off a pass from junior
Andrew Scrutchfield early in the third, followed by an unassisted goal from Scrutchfield seven minutes later.
Stevens padded the lead with a pair of scores early in the fourth to put the Ducks up four, and after a Utica goal cut the deficit to three, Sawula capped the scoring with an unassisted goal late in the fourth.
ST. JOHN FISHER 17, ELMIRA 4
Dante Giordano recorded a career-high five goals to lead the St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team to a 17-4 victory over visiting Elmira College on Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to his five goals, the sophomore finished with two ground balls.
With the wins, the Cardinals improve to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in Empire 8 Conference play.
The Cardinals were off to a slow start, allowing the Soaring Eagles to take a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game.
Tim Wagner helped Fisher get right back into the game, scoring his 10th of the year just 30 seconds later to make it a 1-1 game.
Five minutes passed before Giordano scored his first tally of the day.
Nick Rossi extended Fisher's lead to 3-1 with a few minutes left in the opening quarter. Elmira would squeeze in one notch before the horn.
From that point to the 5:31 mark in the fourth quarter, Fisher held Elmira scoreless and jumped out to a 16-3 lead.
The Cardinals saw nine players score with
Andrew Rosso totaling three and
Nick Rossi with two.
Tanner Swan made six saves in net to improve to 8-5 on the year.
Zach Knight saw 10 minutes in net, matching his career-high five saves, while
Justin Townsend recorded five minutes in goal, allowing one tally.
HARTWICK 20, HOUGHTON 3
Hartwick registered all of its scoring in the first three quarters in a dominating performance against visiting Houghton College Wednesday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks rolled to a 20-3 win over the Highlanders, which is also marks the Hawks' third straight victory.
Hartwick is now 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8 Conference. Houghton falls to 1-10 and 0-6.
Thirteen different players recorded at least a point in the game.
Roy Simmons and
Jacob Sasche combined for half of the Hawks' goals. Simmons scored a career-high six goals with Sasche adding a career-best four tallies.
Pat Robinson contributed three goals for 'Wick.
Brendan Dieck added two goals and two assists, and
Adam Goss chipped in with two goals.
The Hawks had big advantages in shots (56-21) and ground balls (54-16). They also won all 14 of the first half face-offs.
'Wick would lead by a 12-0 margin at halftime. Simmons scored four times in the opening 30 minutes with Sasche adding three goals. Goss,
Sean Brown,
Evan Petillo, Dieck, Sasche, and Simmons netted the first six goals for the Hawks in the first quarter. Simmons' second of the game made it 7-0 Hartwick after one quarter.
Sasche tallied the first two goals of the second period followed by a Robinson tally. It marked Robinson's first goal in a Hartwick uniform. Simmons tacked on another two goals to close out the half.
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard 36 seconds into the third period. Robinson, Sasche and Simmons answered for 'Wick for a 15-1 lead. Houghton scored its second of the game at 6:54, but the Hawks adding five more goals in a 4:18 span for a 20-2 lead after three quarters. Robinson, Goss, Simmons, Dieck, and
David Bianculli recorded the Hartwick goals.
In the fourth with the game in hand, the Hawks pulled back the offense. Houghton's Justin Flint scored his second goal of the game for the period's lone tally.
Connor Hudson was perfect in the circle with 14 face-off wins. He also registered a game- and career-high 13 ground balls. Robinson added six ground balls and Simmons grabbed four.
Mike Rourke and
Sam Nowak combined for six saves in cage. Rourke stopped five in the first half. Nowak made one stop in the second.
Cortland 13,
NAZARETH 11
Host Cortland outdueled Nazareth Wednesday in a non-conference battle of nationally ranked men's lacrosse teams. The Red Dragons got four goals each from Zach Hopps and Matt Rakoczy in a 13-11 victory over the Golden Flyers at Cortland's Stadium Complex.
Nazareth, ranked 14th nationally in Division III, dropped to 10-4 overall, while 12th-ranked Cortland improved to 9-4 after defeating the Golden Flyers for the seventh straight time. Nazareth leads the overall series 18-10. Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday against Stevens at 12 p.m. in the Flyers' final regular-season home game.
In a rare turn of events Wednesday, Cortland's Pat Baldwin outshined Nazareth's
Drew Simoneau at the face-off x. He won 10 of the first 11 draws taken and 15 of 26 overall. That enabled the Red Dragons to gain advantages in shots (39-35) and ground balls (34-28).
Luke Wooters had three goals and five assists for Nazareth and
Troy Haefele added two goals and two assists and
Will Fallo also scored twice.
Cortland led 8-6 at halftime as Mike Cantelli, Rakoczy and Hopps each scored twice. The Red Dragons scored twice in the closing minute of the half to break a 6-6 tie.Nazareth got goals from six different players. Haefele,
Nick Arnold and Fallo scored in the first quarter and
Vincent Loscalzo,
Matt McDermott and
Hunter Burdick scored in the second. Wooters had four assists.
Cortland scored the first goal of the third quarter to regain a three-goal cushion, but Nazareth stayed close with third-quarter tallies from Haefele and Wooters. Fallo scored an extra-man goal for Nazareth early in the fourth quarter, but goals by Rakoczy and Hopps kept Cortland ahead. Wooters also scored twice in the fourth as Nazareth desparately tried to tie the score, but Red Dragons' goalie Scott Tota was responsible for 11 saves.
The Golden Flyers also flipped goalies at the end of the first quarter, opting for junior
Scott Brown, who received his mnost significant playing time since the first game of the season, when he suffered a knee injury. Sophomore Mike Cuciti made three saves while allowing five goals in the opening quarter, Brown had nine saves over the final three quarters while allowing eight goals.
