Ithaca Sweeps; Fisher Splits; Utica Falls

ITHACA v RPI
The Ithaca College softball team recorded its second-straight sweep on Wednesday with two road wins against Rensselaer. The Bombers won the first game by a score of 6-0 before taking game two, 4-3. The sweep moves Ithaca's overall record to 12-10. The Engineers' record now sits at 14-10.

Ithaca 6, Rensselaer 0
Junior Laura Quicker earned the complete game shutout victory for the Bombers in game one. She allowed just five hits and struck out six Engineers, moving her overall record to 6-6.
 
Senior Francesca Busa went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. She also recorded a double, accounting for Ithaca's lone extra-base hit in the win. Junior Casey Gavin was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Nicole Ciricillo paced the Bombers with two RBI thanks to a 3-for-4 outing.
 
Ithaca got on the board first with a huge offensive output in the top of the fourth inning, as the Bombers scored four runs on four hits and one RPI error in the frame.
 
With runners at first and third, senior Monica Capolongo laid down a bunt before reaching on a fielder's choice. Robichaud advanced home from third on the play, giving Ithaca the first run of the game. After an out in the following at-bat, Ciricillo hit a single to center field, scoring two more runs and tripling Ithaca's lead.
 
A bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Busa later in the inning capped the scoring drive, giving Ithaca the 4-0 advantage.
 
The Bombers added to their lead with lone runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. An RBI single from sophomore Kate Brainard in the fifth and a bases-loaded RBI groundout from Gavin in the sixth accounted for the insurance scoring, giving Ithaca a 6-0 lead.
 
Rensselaer wasn't able to answer back in the final inning, giving the Bombers a 6-0 game one victory.
 
Ithaca 4, Rensselaer 3            
Junior Allison Macari took to the circle in game two. She earned the complete game victory after allowing just three earned runs on six hits, while also recording five strikeouts.

Busa paced the Bombers with three hits in four at-bats, while Bloom and freshman Hannah Peters tied for the team lead with two RBI each. Bloom was 2-for-3 with a double and Peters was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single.

Ithaca scored the first two runs of the contest on four hits in the top of the third inning to take the early lead. After back-to-back singles from freshman Allie Colleran and Busa, Bloom doubled to left center to advance both runners home and give Ithaca the 2-0 lead.

The Bombers doubled their lead in the top of the sixth frame, thanks to two hits and an Engineer error. With the bases loaded and two outs, Peters hit a pinch-hit single to left field, scoring two more runs and pushing Ithaca's lead to 4-0.

Rensselaer was able to put up three retaliation runs in the bottom of the frame, but Quicker and the rest of the Ithaca defense stopped the rally before the Engineers were able to tie the contest. Rensselaer wasn't able to cross home again, giving Ithaca the 4-3 win and the non-conference road sweep.


ST. JOHN FISHER v Cortland
The St. John Fisher College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at SUNY Cortland, winning the opener 3-0 before falling 8-4 in the nightcap.
 
Fisher 3, Cortland 0
Fisher took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and chipped away later to earn the victory in Game 1.

Jennifer Knaak crossed the plate first for the Cardinals on an Emma Savas single. Fisher held onto the one-run lead through the sixth inning when Kate Disbrow singled to left field, bringing in pinch runner Christina Sakran.

Meghan Burns capped off the offense with a solo home run to left center in the seventh inning. It marks her 12th career longball and the second of the season.

Knaak and Danielle Ventrone both finished with two hits apiece to lead the offense.

Lindsey Thayer threw 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the shutout.

Cortland 8, Fisher 4
The Red Dragons put together a five-run fourth inning and never looked back to earn the victory.

Fisher took the lead once again in the first inning, tallying three runs on some short game plays from Katie Mazierski and Burns.

The Cardinals added to their lead in the second inning when Burns continued her hitting streak on a single to shortstop, scoring Kristina Balsano. The senior captain has now recorded a hit in each of the past 13 games.

Cortland erupted for runs in the fourth inning on three singles and a three-run home run. The Red Dragons added to their now 5-4 lead in the fifth inning on two doubles and a walk, making it an 8-4 game.

Lauren Owens led the Cardinals, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and run. Burns, Savas and Karlie Neale added a RBI each.

Halie Schoff took the loss from the circle, allowing nine hits, eight runs (six earned) and four walks in five innings pitched. Kayla DePara came in relief, striking out two and walking one in the sixth inning.


UTICA v Rochester
The Utica College softball team lost a non-conference doubleheader to host University of Rochester, 4-0 in the first game and 9-5 in a ten-inning affair in game two.
 
The Pioneers (10-12) have now lost six straight, including three in extra innings.  Utica looks to get back on track this weekend as it hosts Nazareth College and St. John Fisher College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.  Game time both days is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Utica's Greenman Field.
 
Utica 0, U of R 4- Game One Final
The Yellow Jackets scored one run in the bottom of the first inning and added three more scores in the fourth to pick up their 17th win of the season.  Rochester's Brittany Grage was solid in the circle as she allowed just three hits and struck out six in the complete game victory.
 
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville)Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda), and Dominique Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) each had hits for UC, while Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and Brittany Meka (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) combined for four strikeouts.  Russell also added one stolen base. 
 
Utica 5, U of R 9- Game Two Final (10 Innings)
Rochester used a two-out walk off grand slam in the bottom of the tenth inning to earn a comeback victory over the Pioneers.  Utica got off on the right foot as the Pioneers plated one run in the top of the first inning as Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) hit a double to score Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place).  It was short lived however, as the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Fitzgerald once again put the Pioneers on top in the third inning as she blasted a three-run shot to left field, scoring Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and Alysa Russell(Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville).
 
Rochester added one run in the fourth to tie the game, however neither team was able to score over the next five innings, leading to an exciting tenth inning.  Stransky gave UC a one-run cushion as she drove in Russell, however U of R was able to plate five runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

Freshman Kimberly Beattie (Levitton, NY/Division Ave) finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Stransky was 3-for-5 with one run scored. Fitzgerald was 2-for-5 with four RBI, including her team-leading third homerun of the season, while Wickwire, Stephanie Siriano (Sauquoit, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), and Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) each had one hit. 
 
Wickwire shouldered the loss as she allowed five earned runs in seven innings of work, while Stransky gave up five hits in 2.2 innings.  Eleni Wechsler and Brittany Grage combined for six strikeouts for Rochester.
