Fisher Wins Regional Matchup; Alfred and Elmira Drop Road Contests

ST. JOHN FISHER 14, Brockport 13
In a matchup between two of the top team in the NCAA Division III East Region, the St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse program held on for a 14-13 win over host College at Brockport on Thursday.  With the win, Fisher improves to 9-4 overall, while Brockport falls to 7-5.  The Golden Eagles entered today's game ranked third in the latest NCAA regional rankings and No. 24 in the national coaches poll, while Fisher was ranked seventh in the regional rankings.
 
It was a back and forth game early on, with the contest tied at 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s before two straight goals from Brockport put the Golden Eagles up 7-5 with 17:54 left in the first half.
 
Brockport led 8-6 with under 10 minutes to go in the first, but Fisher scored the game's next six goals to take the lead for good.  
 
The Cardinals led 10-8 at the half and sophomore Jordan Johnson pushed her team's lead to 12-8 with two goals in the opening three minutes of the second half.
 
Danielle Falck put the Cardinals up 13-9 midway through the second half, while freshman Morgan Young closed out the scoring for Fisher with a man-up goal with 4:11 left, extending her team's lead to 14-12.
 
Brockport scored with just under two minutes left to pull within a goal, but Fisher won the ensuing draw and kept possession for the remainder of the game.
 
Junior goalie Nicole Hart earned the win in goal for Fisher, racking up 10 saves and allowing seven goals over the final 48 minutes.
 
Sierra Badger tallied four points on three goals and one assist, while winning three draws.  Senior Samantha Barton also scored three goals and won three draws.
 
Johnson finished with two goals and one assist, while senior Lindsey Shoales chipped in with two goals, two draw controls and team-best two ground balls.
 
Falck finished with a goal and an assist, as did Young.  Chrissy Cook and Erin Ward also scored for the Cardinals.
 
Abbie Reed led Fisher with five draw controls.   The Cardinals finished the game 5-for-6 on free position shots, while Brockport was just 1-for-5 for the game.
 

Canton 15, ALFRED 6
Senior Kaitlyn Button netted a hat trick in a 15-6 loss to the SUNY Canton Kangaroos on the road Thursday evening.
 
Freshman Miranda Gilbert scored twice for the Saxons while contributing two assists.   Sophomore Rachel Ball rattled the cage for one goal.
 
AU scored twice in the opening half against the Kangaroos, breaking up a five-goal run to open the game.  Button and Gilbert notched their 25th and 12th goals, respectively, on the season.
 
In the second half Canton opened with another five-goal run before Button and Gilbert broke up the run again.  Button would capitalize five minutes later to grab the hat trick.  Ball scored with 26 seconds to go in the game.
 
Sophomore Leah Ellithorpe paced the Saxons with five groundballs in the contest.  Sophomore Dana Ganley pitched in with three groundballs.  Ellithorpe and Button had two caused turnovers, each, to set the standard for AU.  Button collected a team-high five draw controls. 
 
Freshman goalie Shannon Gray had 18 saves in sixty minutes of work.


Oswego 19, ELMIRA 4
The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (2-11) fell to Oswego State (19-4) in a non-conference matchup today. Marisa Carr '18 led the EC women with two goals while Lindsay Wargo '17 stopped nine shots in today's action.
 
The Lakers took control of the game early in the first as Oswego would out shoot the Purple and Gold 20-3 in the half. The Lakers would head into half time with a lead of 13-0.
 
Oswego netted the first two goals of the second half in the first 4:21 to up their lead to 15-0. Kyra McDonald '18 found Carr 7:15 into the half who put EC's first goal of the day on the scoreboard. The Lakers responded 1:32 later with a goal to take a 16-1 lead. Moorea Spoljaric '16 and Carr scored back-to-back goals to cut Oswego's lead to 16-3 with 13:03 left in regulation time. The Lakers responded with another goal with 6:46 remaining to take a 17-3 lead. Marissa Mongillo '15 scored EC's final goal of the game with 4:11 left as Oswego registered the game's final two goals to win, 19-4.
