Yano, Boardman Lead Stevens Past Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (April 17, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team thumped out 20 hits to defeat Houghton College 15-7 on Friday afternoon.
The Ducks upped their record to 17-10 while the Highlanders dropped to 14-13.
After a scoreless first two innings, it was the home team who put the first run aboard as Christopher McKay hit in an RBI groundout. The guest Ducks answered with three in the top of the fourth as sophomore
Michael Mule' reached on an error to score junior
Jayson Yano, and junior
Nick Sieber came around to score on a balk. Senior
Ryan Mannello came up and brought Mule' in with a single.
A ribbie single by Trenton Unverdorben brought the Highlanders within a run, but Stevens answered with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to grab a 10-2 lead. Yano, Sieber, Mule', and senior
Brian Hennelly all had RBI knocks in the fifth, and the sixth saw the Ducks scratch across runs on an error and a passed ball.
The Highlanders scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a double play, but Stevens responded like they had in the past with a three run inning, capped off by a two-run single through the left side by junior
Tyler Bush. Houghton scored four in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of bases loaded walks, a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. The Ducks capped off the scoring thanks to a single by senior
Marc Calleo which plated fellow senior
Gregg Nickels.
Calleo went 3-for-4 with two RBI's while Yano had four hits and three runs scored to along with two RBI's. Mule' and Bush also chipped in two RBI's apiece while senior
Gary Boardman scattered four hits over seven innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Sophomore
Bridger Cohen tossed an inning and third of hitless relief, punching out three.
Unverdorben, McKay and Bryan Hodge had two RBI's a piece for the Highlanders.
The two teams will meet in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
