Ithaca, Fisher, Stevens and Canton Pick Up Two Wins
ST. JOHN FISHER v ELMIRA
The St. John Fisher College baseball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday over visiting Elmira College, marking Fisher's seventh win in the last eight games.
Fisher improves to 13-15 overall while Elmira falls to 1-19.
Fisher 13, Elmira 2 (7 innings)
Fisher jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Elmira got one back in the third, but Fisher answered, scoring four in the fourth and five in the fifth to pull away.
Stephen Lewis raised his record to 2-0 on the year, pitching all seven innings with seven strikeouts.
Shane Barley led Fisher at the plate, driving in four runs on two hits, while scoring two runs.
Freshman
Tyler Troccia went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while
Jack Trotman also added two hits and two runs.
Matthew Cahill drove in two runs, while
Joe Simmons and
Cody Wiktorski both finished with two hits and a run scored.
Calvin Woolhiser and
Chris Dugan each scored a run, while
Scott Eisenmenger was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Mike Roman scored twice and tallied two RBI, while
Malcolm Kelsey singled in his lone at-bat.
Fisher 9, Elmira 5
Eisenmenger, who finished 3-for-5 in the game, picked up an RBI single to score Barley in the first inning.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the second at the hands of
Jack Vivinetto and Roman. Vivenetto knocked around Wiktorski on a double down the line, while Roman scored Vivenetto on a single through the left side.
Holding a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, Fisher added three runs to open up a 6-2 lead, including a 2 RBI double from Barley.
Barley added a solo homer in the sixth inning before Simmons doubled down the left field line to score Wiktorksi and Cahill to open up a 9-3 advantage.
Elmira added three runs in the eighth inning, but
Ryan Smith came in relief to shut the Soaring Eagles down in the final frame.
Loukas Brigham earned the win for Fisher to improve to 2-2 on the year. He allowed 10 hits and two runs while striking out three.
Barley and Simmons each finished 3-for-5 in the game, notching three and two RBI, respectively.
ITHACA v UTICA
The Ithaca College baseball team scored a combined 12 runs in their final at bats of a doubleheader sweep at Utica on Saturday. Ithaca won the opener, 9-5, and took Game Two, 10-8, to improve to 10-9 on the season.
Game One: Ithaca 9, Utica 5
Ithaca trailed for the entire opener until the Bombers strung together seven runs in their final at bat. The Bombers capitalized on three walks and two errors with three hits during the seventh.
During the rally, sophomore
Josh Savacool led off with a single and was followed by a walk to senior
Brian Burns. Junior
Zach Pidgeon drew a walk to load the bases and then another free pass was issued to junior
Stephen Yanchus to push across the first run. Senior
Matt Connolly drove in the next run on a single, and then the Bombers took the lead on a fielder's choice and error which allowed Yanchus and Pidgeon to score. With runners now on second and third, freshman Domenic Boresta singled to score Connolly to make the score 7-5. Another error would be committed by Utica to push the final two runs across.
Prior to the comeback, Utica jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning on a three-run home run, but the Bombers answered right back in the top of the second with one run.
In the frame, Pidegon started things off with a single, stole second, and then came around to score on a double off the bat of Yanchus.
After Utica regained a three-run lead at 4-1 through three innings, Ithaca brought it back to within two runs as sophomore
Ryan Henchey scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. The Bombers had a chance to tie things up later in the inning with two runners in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the threat.
The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double to go back up by three runs at 5-2 and held onto that lead until Ithaca's seven-run seventh inning.
Senior
Andrew Sanders earned his fourth win of the season in a near complete game. Sanders gave up five earned runs on 12 hits, but also struck out seven batters. Fellow senior
Jimmy Wagner came in to retire the final out of the game on a strike out with the bases loaded for his fourth save.
Yanchus and Savacool both collected two hits in the opener. Yanchus also doubled twice and drove in two runs with a run scored, while Savacool scored a run.
Game Two: Ithaca 10, Utica 8
In the nightcap, sophomore
Trevor Thompson dealt the big blow to complete the doubleheader comeback sweep with a three-run homerun in the top of the ninth inning to give the Bombers a 10-8 victory. Sophomore
Josh Savacool and freshman
Brennan McCormack were on base after reaching on an error and as a pinch runner – McCormack for senior
Brian Burns after a base hit.
Ithaca capitalized all game on sloppy defensive play by Utica. In the second inning, the Pioneers committed two errors in the inning which led to a 3-0 lead for the Bombers.
Pidgeon began the inning by reaching on an error and the Yanchus singled. Brown sent a double to left field to clear the bases and senior
Cooper Belyea followed with an RBI on another error to score Brown.
Utica would score twice in the bottom of the third to make the score, 3-2, but Ithaca tacked on another run in the fifth on two more Pioneer errors.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Utica captured its first lead in the game, 5-4, on three unearned runs. Back-to-back singles drove in the first two runs and the third came around to scoring on a throwing error on an attempted pick off.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh on another three-run homer with one out to force junior
Brandon Diorio out of the game. Diorio lasted 6.1 innings in his third start of the season and allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Ithaca got one back in the eighth on a throwing error that allowed Pidgeon to score from second base. Pidgeon reached on a single and moved up to second on a wild pitch before scoring on the errant throw off a groundball from Yanchus.
In the ninth, the Bombers scored five runs. The first run came in on a single from Burns before Thompson's round-tripper. After a single from Connolly and stolen base, Brown picked up an RBI base hit to cap off the frame.
All 10 of Ithaca's runs scored in Game Two were unearned.
Junior
Ryan Contegni picked up the win in victory in 1.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Wagner snatched his second save of the day, striking out two in the ninth.
STEVENS v HOUGHTON
The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept a doubleheader against Houghton College 8-1 and 11-1.
The Ducks have emerged victorious in 11 of their last 12 games, running their record to 19-10 while Houghton fell to 14-14
Game 1:
Stevens manufactured a run in the top of the second inning after junior
Nick Sieber reached on an error and moved to second on an error. A groundout advanced him to third and he was brought home by an infield hit by senior
Brian Hennelly. The Highlanders evened the score in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Tage Johnson scored Trenton Unverdorben.
From then on, it was all Ducks as they scored the final seven runs of the contest, including three in the top of the fifth with two outs. After a pair of groundouts, junior
Jonathan Toro reached on a walk and given home on a triple by senior
Marc Calleo. Sophomore
Zeph Walters drove in Toro on a fielder's choice, and junior
Jayson Yanoknocked in sophomore
Nolan Bennett with a double down the right field line.
Stevens scratched a run across in the top of the sixth on an infield single and error, which was followed up with a three-run seventh inning. Toro led off with a triple and was plated by a Bennett single. Sieber drove in sophomore pinch runner
Harrison Kaye, who had moved into scoring position with a stolen base and the scoring was ended on an ribbie double by sophomore
Michael Mule'.
Toro, Bennett and Calleo each had two hits while seven different players drove in runs. Freshman
Alex Detweilerstarted and allowed two hits in four innings while allowing one unearned run. Sophomore
Bret Viola tossed three shutout innings of relief punching out three Highlander hitters.
Bryan Hodge had two hits for the home team while Unverdorben had reached on two walks. Seth Cornell threw six innings allowing five runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out four.
Game 2:
Houghton pushed the first run of the game across in their first at bat. Leadoff man Enrico Sukhdeo led off with a single to center and proceeded to swipe second and third. He came across on an RBI groundout by Michael Kerr and after one the Highlander led 1-0. That would be all the runs they would get, as Walters, freshmen
Quinn DiPasquale and
Andrew Hamel held the hosts scoreless over the final eight innings.
Mule' started the run scoring parade for the Ducks with an RBI single in the top of the second, and Walters helped his own cause with a run-scoring hit of his own. Yano knocked a run in on a ground ball and moved over to third a throwing error, scoring on a double steal attempt.
After a scoreless three innings, Stevens continued the scoring with Sieber swiping third base and coming home on a throwing error by the catcher. Senior
Gregg Nickels, who had three hits on the afternoon, doubled in a run in the top of the seventh and touched home on a single by Yano. Sieber continued his hot hitting with a two-run triple. Freshman
Drew Hanke hit a sac-fly in the top of the eighth with Kaye drawing a bases loaded walk to end the scoring for Stevens.
After pounding out 20 hits yesterday, the Ducks rapped out 18 in the nightcap including three from Sieber and Nickels and a pair from Walters, Toro, Hennelly, Calleo and freshman
Tommy Baronner. Yano and Sieber each had two RBI's. Walters started on the mound and went five innings striking out nine walking only one while surrendering five hits with Hamel tossing three hitless innings out of the bullpen with seven punch outs.
Jared Knowlton allowed 11 hits in six innings allowing five runs (three earned) with no strikeouts.
CANTON v Alfred State
The SUNY Canton baseball team swept host Alfred State College 3-1 and 9-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1
Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) doubled to right field to score
Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) in the top of the fourth. The Roos would add two more runs in the fifth to spot the pitching staff a 3-0 lead.
Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) reached on an error in the fifth to score
Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL) and Douglas used a base hit to bring Matos across.
The Pioneers would bring across a run in the bottom half of the fifth but
John Mancini (Scotia, NY) came on to close the door throwing two innings of one hit ball to earn his first save of the season.
Travis Bigelow (Ottawa, ON) earned the win on the mound tossing five innings surrendering just four hits and one earned run.
Game 2
The Roos jumped out to a quick start in the nightcap plating three in the top of the first on a Douglas three-run homer scoring Matos and
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico).
Alfred State scored four runs plating one in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. SUNY Canton knotted the game at four in the top of the fifth with a solo shot from Matos.
The teams would take the 4-4 tie into extra innings as neither team could score a run in the sixth or seventh. The Roos came through with their biggest inning of the day scoring five runs in the eighth.
Vinny Bondinello (Egg Harbor, NJ) bunted home
Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, FL). Jones followed with a base hit to left plating Bondinello. Matos doubled home a pair of runs and Douglas rounded out the scoring with a single to score Matos.
Alfred State would bring one run across in the bottom of the inning Mancini closed out the game for the win.
Mancini finished off a solid day earning a save and win in two appearances on the day. He threw one inning giving up two hits and one earned run.
Derek Harkin (Ottawa, ON) earned the no-decision.
