Utica Downs Keuka; Houghton and Fisher Fall on the Road
UTICA
The Utica College women's lacrosse team cruised to victory over host Keuka College, 19-4, in non-conference action Thursday evening. Senior
Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) led the Pioneers with seven points.
With the win, UC improves to 6-3 overall and avenges an 11-10 loss at the hands of the Wolfpack last season. Utica will enjoy a week off before returning to conference play next weekend as it hosts Alfred University and Nazareth College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Utica jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest behind a pair of goals from
Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy), and one tally each from
Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) and
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy). The Pioneers went on to hold a 9-2 advantage after the first 30 minutes. Utica did not slow down as it netted 10 goals in the second half to earn the victory.
Miller and Kane each ended the day with four goals, with Kane adding four draw controls and four ground balls. Wheeler and DuPont each found the back of the net three times, with DuPont adding a team-high four assists and Wheeler dishing out three assists. Sophomore
Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and freshman
Melissa Koch (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) each scored two goals, while
Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) had one goal.
Junior
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made seven saves in nearly 52 minutes of work, while teammate
Erin Jacobson (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) had two saves in eight minutes of relief. Keuka's Maeve Fletcher made ten saves in the loss.
HOUGHTON
Houghton women's lacrosse dropped a 15-10 decision on the road to SUNY Cantion on Thursday.
Houghton went up 1-0 on a goal from
Elizabeth Westwood(Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) and got two goals from
Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and another from
Bethany Kuiken (Pompton Plains, NJ, Eastern Christian) to grab a 4-3 lead with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half. However, the host Roos scored five times over the final eight minutes of the half to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
Houghton was outshot19-8 in the first half.
The Highlanders got two goals apiece from
Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman) and Zacchigna and single tallies from Westwood and
Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) in the second half, but the Roos scored seven times over the final 30 minutes to claim the win.
Zacchigna finished with four goals, five ground balls, six caused turnovers and six draw controls. Jones tallied a goal and six assists.
Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast ) stopped 18 shots in net.
The Roos held a 40-21 advantage in shots and a 36-27 edge in ground balls.
ST. JOHN FISHER
Fifth-ranked SUNY Cortland picked up a 19-4 win over visiting St. John Fisher College on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, Fisher falls to 6-4 overall, while Cortland improves to 8-1 overall.
The Red Dragons led 5-0 with just under eight minutes left in the first half, but Fisher got on the board with a goal from junior
Sierra Badger. Cortland, however, scored six more goals in the final 5:54 of the first half to take an 11-1 lead at the break and scored the first six goals of the second half to pull away.
For Fisher,
Morgan Young,
Chrissy Cook and
Jordan Johnson also scored. Young also led Fisher with three ground balls. Senior
Samantha Barton totaled two draw controls, while
Lindsey Shoales caused two turnovers.
