Ithaca, Alfred and Fisher Win E8 Matches

ITHACA 8, ELMIRA 1
The Ithaca College men's tennis team clinched a berth in the Empire 8 playoffs following an 8-1 victory at Elmira on Tuesday, April 21. Ithaca swept the doubles matches and got singles victories at the top-five positions in the lineup. Ithaca is 7-7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8. Elmira is 6-5 on the season and 3-3 in the conference. Ithaca will host the Empire 8 Championships May 2-3 on campus.

Chris Hayes and Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos got Ithaca started with an 8-3 win at second doubles, followed by Charlie Vaca and Nate Wolf with an 8-2 win at third doubles. The first doubles team of Wes Davis and Jack Melhorn completed the sweep with an 8-5 win.

Four of Ithaca's singles victories were achieved in straight sets. Davis won at fourth singles, followed off by Hayes and Melhorn. Viguie-Ramos won in three sets at the second spot and Wolf closed out the Ithaca run of victories with a 6-3, 6-1 win at fifth singles.

EC's lone point came from Yaniv Kogan '18 at sixth singles.


ALFRED 5, NAZARETH 4
The Alfred University men's tennis team moved closer to a berth in the Empire 8 Conference championships with a 5-4 victory at Nazareth College Tuesday afternoon.
 
AU won its seventh straight match to improve to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in Empire 8 play. The Saxons got singles wins from junior Connor Doud , 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in first singles; freshman Kevin Volz , 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in fourth singles; and junior Patrick Brown, 6-3, 7-6 in sixth doubles. Brown's win clinched the win for the Saxons.
 
AU took two of three doubles matches. Doud and Volz won first doubles, 8-6, while senior Michael Graham and sophomore Evan Haskins  won second doubles, 8-6.

Nazareth's doubles win came at third doubles from the tandem of senior Matt Jennings and junior Brian Rosiek. Jennings and Rosiek defeated by Pat Brown and Matt Baloga 8-3. 

In singles, Nazareth captured three out of the six singles matches. The wins came at second, third, and fifth singles from Matt JenningsChristian Bryant, and Jared Sharza respectively. Jennings took down Alfred's Evan Haskins 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Bryant won at third singles with a final score of 6-1, 6-4. Sharza gained Nazareth's last point at sixth singles against Matt Baloga 6-3, 6-4. 


ST. JOHN FISHER 6, HOUGHTON 3 
The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team defeated Houghton College 6-3 on Tuesday.

Pat McGrathJacob Zarzycki and Kevin Kulawiec combined for five of Fisher's six points. First doubles duo McGrath and Zarzycki beat Houghton 8-6. Both student-athletes also won their singles play with McGrath topping Houghton 6-0, 7-5 at second singles and Zarzycki winning 6-1, 6-3 at third singles. Kulawiec earned a point at first singles, 6-3, 6-4. The freshman paired with Adam Moran at second doubles to win 8-3.

Kyle Stich rounded out Fisher's scoring with a point at sixth singles. He dropped the first set 4-6 then came back to win,  6-2, 10-8.

Jordan Scott (fourth singles), Connor Barnes (fifth singles) and the doubles team of Bjorn Webb and Jordan Crouch each got wins for Houghton.
