Fisher and Stevens Stay Hot; Clarkson Falls Short
ST. JOHN FISHER v RIT
The St. John Fisher College baseball team earned its ninth win in its last 11 games, as the Cardinals collected a 9-2 win over visiting Rochester Institute of Technology on Wednesday at Fisher's Dugan Yard.
With the win, Fisher improves to 15-16 overall, while the Tigers fall to 16-7.
Fisher jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after back-to-back doubles from
Shane Barley and
Scott Eisenmenger with two outs. The Cardinals tallied another run in the second after
Cody Wiktorski tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
Fisher added two more runs in the third, capitalizing on three RIT errors.
Mike Roman delivered the big hit in the fourth – a two-run double down the line in left to put the Cardinals up 6-1.
The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the eighth to seal the win.
Senior
Josh Amann earned the win on the mound for Fisher. He went six innings, allowing just four hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
Kevin Berge (seventh and eighth) and
Ryan Smith (ninth) kept the Tigers off the board over the final three innings.
Matthew Cahill was 1-for-4 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.
Wiktorski, Barley and
Joe Simmons each scored two runs, while Eisenmenger was the lone player to record a multi-hit game.
STEVENS v New Jersey City University
The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team pounded out 22 hits en route to a 18-8 victory over New Jersey City University on Wednesday.
NJCU saw its record fall to 12-18 while Stevens notched its seventh straight win moving to 22-10.
The Ducks started the scoring as soon as they got off the bus, putting up five runs in the first inning. Junior
Nick Sieber started the scoring by knocking home junior Jonathon Toro who had singled. Sophomore
Michael Mule' bounced a grounder to second and legged out the throw, moving to second to on a throwing error that allowed two runs to score. Senior
Ryan Mannello came up and bashed a two-run double to left center for two runs, chasing the second Gothic Knights pitcher of the frame.
NJCU rallied for two in the bottom of the inning, with Alex Weinstein driving in two runs with a single down the right field line. In the top of the second, Stevens put together their finest inning and also their longest inning of the season time-wise. Freshman
Tommy Baronner led off with a single and moved to third on a single by sophomore
Zeph Walters. A single by junior
Jayson Yano knocked in Baronner and another Mule' single through the right side plated Walters.
Mannello knocked in his third runner of the afternoon with a single, and after walk loaded the bases, senior
Marc Calleo followed suit and was walked to bring in a run. Toro then roped a two-run single to right, Baronner was hit by a pitch and Walters delivered a ground-rule double to deep center field for two more runs. After a two RBI hit by Yano, the game was halted for 59 minutes to rain and lightning.
The Gothic Knights put three markers on the board in the bottom of the fifth on when Weinstein knocked in a run on a single, Eric Giordano reached on a bases loaded walk and Nick Ruscingno drove home a run with a fielder's choice. After holding the Ducks at bay in the top of the sixth, Andrew Niech and Michael Martucci each had run scoring doubles down the left field line cutting the deficit down to eight. A run on a sacrifice fly brought the hosts a little bit closer, but it was as close as they would get.
Stevens tallied three insurance runs in the of the eighth, after a Calleo triple and a walk to freshman
Drew Hankebrought up Walters, who promptly mashed a three run homer to right to cap off the wild afternoon.
Nine Ducks had multiple hit outings, led by Walters and Calleo who had three each. Walters also drove in five runs and scored three times while Mannello and Yano had three RBI's for the visitors. Sophomore
Bret Viola recorded the win in relief, tossing two shutout innings with two strikeouts. Freshman
Andrew Hamel worked four innings for his third save.
Martucci and Weinstein recorded three apiece, with Weinstein knocking in three runs.
Clarkson v CANTON
The SUNY Canton baseball team nearly overcame a two run but host Clarkson University used a late burst to secure a 6-2 victory on Wednesday.
The Golden Knights (16-5) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of RBI singles in the first inning. Clarkson added one run on another base hit through the right side of the infield in the third.
SUNY Canton trimmed the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the seventh inning.
Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) drew a leadoff walk and
Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) followed with another free pass.
Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, NY) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring positon with one out.
Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL) singled to center to score
Mike McGinn (Palmyra, NY) who came on to pinch-run for Roenbeck.
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) reached on an error in the ensuing at-bat to plate Welch but Jones was gunned down at third base on a throw from the center fielder. The inning would end in the next at-bat on a ground out.
Clarkson regained a three run lead with a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh and added an insurance run in the eight on a sacrifice fly.
Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) and Welch led off the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with base hits but the Roos were unable to get another run across.
Travis Bigelow (Ottawa, ON) threw seven innings surrendering five earned runs finishing with two walks and four strike outs.
Dom Deliberti (Staten Island, NY) gave up one run in one inning of relief action.
