Shutout Victories for Elmira, Ithaca and Stevens
Four Empire 8 tennis matches were played on Saturday afternoon and all four results were 9-0 shutouts. Stevens defeated both Alfred and Houghton, while Elmira beat Utica and Ithaca held of Hartwick.
ELMIRA v UTICA
The Elmira College men's tennis team (7-5, 4-3 Empire 8) continued their pursuit of qualifying for this year's Empire 8 Conference Tournament with an all-important 9-0 conference victory over Utica College (1-10, 0-7 Empire 8). Elmira's win sets up a showdown tomorrow between the Soaring Eagles and Nazareth College, a match that if won by the Purple and Gold would send EC to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007 and the first time since the tournament field was narrowed from eight to four teams.
Third-year talent and Elmira, NY native,
Satchal Waters '16 was one of six double-winners for the Soaring Eagles today. Waters tallied both a singles and doubles win, both of which moved the junior netter up in the Elmira College record books.
With two wins today, Waters increased his career total wins to 47, putting him in sole possession of second place as he passes former teammate,
Sam Pine '14, who ended his EC career with 46. His 47 career wins have come in the form of 22 singles victories and 25 doubles wins. His 22 triumphs on the singles court puts him in a two-way tie for third place in Elmira history, one shy of second-place Dave Olsson '02, and his 25 doubles wins puts him in a two-way tie for first place with Pine.
Additionally, Elmira saw
Keith Bujak '15 and
Austin Mansell '16 move up in the EC record books as well. Bujak and Mansell are sitting on 21 doubles victories, putting them in a five-way tie for third place in Elmira history. Mansell's singles victory today ups his career total to 22, putting him in a two-way tie with Waters for third place on the EC leaderboard.
Elmira opened today's contest by sweeping the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead right out of the gate. For Elmira, today's doubles sweep is the fourth time this season the Soaring Eagles have won all three doubles matches.
In doubles play, Elmira won 24-of-28 games played. EC's first doubles tandem of
Keith Bujak '15 and
Satchal Waters '16 cruised to an 8-1 win as the duo improved to 8-8 on the year, including a very impressive 8-4 mark in dual matches.
Elmira's second doubles team of
Austin Mansell '16 and
Chris Konow '18 improved to 7-3 on the year following an 8-3 win this afternoon.
Patrick Tracey '18 and
Yaniv Kogan '18 completed the doubles sweep for Elmira as the fellow classmates blanked their opponents at the third position, 8-0.
In singles action, Elmira built on their momentum from the doubles matches as the Purple and Gold won 72-of-79 games played. Elmira saw Mansell, Konow, and Tracey tally 6-0, 6-0 wins at third, fourth, and fifth singles, respectively. For Mansell, his win at the third spot brings his season total singles victories to eight, which are the most singles wins of his three-year EC career.
Bujak picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles, Waters earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at second, and Kogan tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory at sixth.
Elmira will be back in action tomorrow when the Soaring Eagles welcome Nazareth College for EC's home and regular season finale. Match-time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.

ITHACA v Hartwick
The Ithaca College men's tennis team swept all nine matches in a 9-0 dual-match victory at Hartwick on Saturday afternoon. Ithaca improved its record to 8-7-1 on the season and 5-1 in the Empire 8. The Bombers have one regular-season match remaining, which will take place Sunday at noon at home against St. John Fisher. The winner of that match will finish second in the Empire 8 standings.
The Bombers swept through the doubles matches with an 8-0 win by
Wes Davis and
Jack Melhorn, an 8-2 win at third doubles by
Nate Wolf and
Ericsson Bissell and an 8-4 win at second doubles by
Chris Hayes and
Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos.
Three of the singles matches were won by Ithaca players who dropped just one game in their rmatch -- Hayes, Davis and Wolf.
Ithaca will host the Empire 8 Men's Tennis Championships on May 2-3 on campus.

STEVENS v ALFRED/HOUGHTON
The No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team wrapped up its Empire 8 Conference regular season schedule Saturday with a pair of 9-0 wins over Alfred University and Houghton College.
The wins moved Stevens to 15-5 (7-0) while Alfred and Houghton fell to 10-4 (4-3) and () respectively.

Henry and sophomore Michael Feldman continued the Ducks doubles dominance with an 8-1 win at No. 1, while junior Tyler Tisdale and Perich took the 8-5 win at No. 2.
Freshman David Schulz got his first action of the day at third doubles, teaming with Thigpen for the 8-6 win at No. 3. The win was the third of the season for the Stevens duo.
Feldman played the top spot for the Ducks once singles started, taking the 6-2, 7-6 win to go along with a 6-2, 6-1 for Drake at No. 2. Perich and Persson each won 6-2, 6-1 at their respective singles matches, and Tisdale won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
