Men's Track And Field Performs Well At Cardinal Classic

Empire 8 Track and Field teams competed in the Cardinal Classic on Saturday, which was hosted by St. John Fisher College.

ST. JOHN FISHER
After setting the meet and school record last week at the Empire 8 Championship, Kyle Koehler improved on his shot put, throwing 15.87 meters to take the top spot.

In 110 hurdles, Fisher's Peter Girardi took top honors, winning the event with a time of 15.34 seconds.  Senior Chris Wehner was third overall.

In the 400 hurdles, Girardi was victorious again, winning with a time of 56.42 seconds. William Sterriker placed third in the event, finishing in 59.09 seconds.

Brandon Fuentes finished second overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.22 seconds, hitting the NYSCTC A Standard.

Joe D'Agostino placed fifth in the 400 in a time of 51.46, just under the NYSCTC A Standard.  Later in the day, the junior clocked a 22.02 in the 200 meters, the exact same time as last week, to take top honors.  Fuentes was close behind in the 200, running a 22.74 for fourth place.

Senior Evan Magnussen had a strong race in the 1500-meter run, clocking a school record 4:11.23 to hit the NYSCTC B Standard.

James Felice placed eighth in the 800 and set a new Fisher record with a time of 2:00.20, while also notching a NYSCTC B Standard.

In the pole vault, James Koch took seventh place (3.8 meters).


NAZARETH
Junior Luis Rivera continued to dominate the hammer throw event, where he placed first with a throw of 53.95 meters (117 feet). It was just shy of his best mark of 54 meters (177 feet, 2 inches), which he reached at Nazareth's Roc City Classic meet. 

Junior Tom Sippie also recorded a first-place performance. Sippie crossed the line with a time of 49.46, and sophomore Matt Battaglia also had a top-10 time as he placed seventh in :51.54. Freshman Nick LaBarbera was third in the 200-meter dash (:22.69) and fourth in the 100 dash (:11.31).

In field events, junior Brandon Vuolo was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.28 meters (43 feet, 6 7/8 inches), and he was fourth in the discus event with a mark of 39.68 meters (130 feet, 2 1/4 inches). Vuolo was also 10th in the hammer with a mark of 42.26 meters (138 feet, 7 3/4 inches).


UTICA
Sam Kaczmarek earned a first place finish in the discus with a throw of 40.84 meters.  He also placed second in the shot put with a toss of 15.13 meters.  UC also had impressive outings from Kyle Sikes (Mexico, NY/Mexico), Ramirez, and Michael Visco(Amsterdam, NY /Broadalbin-Perth).  Sikes finished third in the pole vault with a height of 4.25 meters and Visco also added a third place finish in the long jump (6.87 m).  Ramirez also chipped in with two points in the javelin (47.86 m).
 
Junior Corey Zlatniski (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) picked up two team points with a fifth place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:58. 74.  Freshman Jonathan Ramirez (West New York, NJ/Memorial ) picked up eight points for the Pioneers as he finished second in the 200 dash with a time of 22.60.


HOUGHTON
Jordan Cady lost by one centimeter, and PR'd by over a meter in the triple hump. He is currently ranked 7th in the NCCAA.

Marshall Brady bettered his NCCAA mark and set a lifetime PR in the 110HH in 16.01. He is currently ranked 15th in the NCCAA.


ALFRED
Sean Locker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West), a senior on the Alfred University men's outdoor track and field team, won the javelin competition Saturday at the St. John Fisher College Cardinal Classic.
 
Locker's winning throw of 57.49 meters highlighted a solid showing by the AU men's and women's teams. The Alfred men took seventh of 15 teams while the Saxon women posted no team score.
 
Other top performers for the Alfred men were: sophomore Kevin Dixon (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen), second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:06.90); sophomore Jeffrey Nunez(Wurtsboro, NY/Ellenville), third in both the hammer throw (46.94 meters) and discus (39.69 meters); and junior Ian Bishop (Bronx, NY/Bronxwood Prep), third in the shot put (13.90 meters).
 
The team of freshmen Ja'Sean Young (Freeport, NY/Freeport), Mathew Finley (Holland, NY/Holland), Matthew Derse (Ontario, NY/Wayne) and Tyler Brion (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) was fifth in the 4X100-meter relay (48.36).
